I have a quick question - probably for the more experienced dwarven generals, here you go:-
When using Slayer when am I bet off using Great Axes or 2 weapons ?
I assume great axes are the choice against a high toughness opponent but what's the cut off point ?
Any ideas out there gained through hard earned experience ? I am due to fight a small battle soon with a mate's Dwarf army - I've never been a "stumpy" before - so I'm not certain when I should switch between weapon types. I will probably be fighting Empire but it could be Goblins & Orcs.
Thanks for your advice,
Its best to look at this in steps.
firstly the slayer rule. when fighting, a slayers strength is increased until your strength is equal to your opponents toughness up to strength 6. Basically you will be wounding on 4s on targets up to toughness 6, or better on targets with a toughness less than 4, regardless of what axes you choose.
E.g. you fight a giant with a troll slayer. before choosing axes your strength is modified to strength 5 as the giant has a toughness of 5. In this case if you chose to use great weapons you will still only be strength 5, so it is better to choose two axes to gain an extra attack.
If for instance you came up against a goblin who is toughness 3, you will already be wounding on 4s, so will gain no benefit from the slayer rule. in this case you will have to choose between an extra attack, or being strength 5 with a great weapon and therefore wounding on 2s.
In types of circumstances where you are already wounding on a 4 the important thing to do is look at the armour value of what you are hitting. for low armour values the like of which goblins have, two hand weapons may be the best option due to the higher fail rate of armour save. On the other hand, with less attacks you are just as likely to kill the same amount of goblins as the higher strength will nullify any armour the goblins may have had due to modifiers. Ergo the goblins would not get a save on wounds caused.
Against the more heavily armoured troop were the slayer modifiers are not as great as the weapon modifier, it is then that great weapons should be utilised for full potential.
E.g. you are fighting empire knights. being only toughness 4 you don’t get strength modifiers, from the slayer rule, so choosing great weapons gives you the bonus of armour modifiers which are more important against heavily armoured troops then the number attack against them.
Don’t forget most dwarves are only initiative 2 so will be striking last anyway, so don’t be afraid to use great weapons and going second in combat as chances are that you will be going last anyway.
Basically if your slayer rule grants you as great or greater strength than a using a great weapon, then use two axes. If on the over hand you need to punch through armour or ensure a kills against low armour low toughness troops then go for great weapons.
This is just how I see the use of slayers and weapons anyway, but I’m sure others have better and simpler ways to think it through.
Hope this has helped a little,
That is an absolutely awesome reply. Thanks very much indeed.
This is what I'm taking as a summary:-
Big hard opponents or those with a lot of armour = great weapons,
all other opponents = 2 axes
Does that sound about right ?
Thansk agains for taking the time out to reply.
All the best,
not quite right.
Against big hard opponents (T5 or higher) you want the two hand weapons
Aganst well armoured opponents but low toughness (T3-4) you want great weapons
Against poorly armoured targets but low toughness (T3-4) you want two hand weapons.

Its amazing how Arklite has summed up my 450ish word rant into 3 sentences, lol.
Just goes to show why he’s got such a good rep power.
Thanks that wa very diplomatic. I totally cocked up in my summary !
Would you guys mind if I put this in the blog for my readers ? It will act as a good note for me to come back to aswell in case this thread is deleted.
Let me know if that's ok. If not, no worries. Thanks for the advice anyway.
PS. I bet you can tell I only usually fire handguns and hellblasters and then get wasted in close combat Lol
