I just got another regiment of Dwarf Warriors and I was deciding what to equip them with. My other current regiment has HWs and shields. Should I give my newest regiment Crossbows or GW? And how many should I have in each? I was thinking 12 for Crossbows, but should the remaining 4 go into the HW regiment or a GW regiment? In other words which should I make the largest, the HW or the GW?
I use big units of Hand weapons, for survivablility, and smaller units of GW as support for them. It seems to work ok.
You could put 2 in each unit to make 18
I would personally never use hand weapons on Dwarfs. With their low I they are bound to strike last most of the time anyway, so why not give them all great weapons.
However, in your situation, I would have them all as great weapons, then a new box of crossbowmen (12) and Great weapons (4). That way you have 16 HW Warriors, 20 GW warriors and 12 Crossbowmen. Problem solved, with good troops choices
I would give them GWs, the extra power in combat comes in really handy. But the Hw/shields are a great unit, adding the HA this unit has 3+ save in combat and combined with LD9 and T4 they are very hard to move. They are also good for setting up a flank charge, the unit holds while a GW flanks them.
But I'd go for 16 GW, then next box you get make them 12 Crossbowmnen and add the 4 spare to the HW/Shield unit.
The great weapon troops die to easy. Its not uncommon for the front rank to be gone before they strike back. Especially with spearmen. It makes the whole dwarf line softer. There also much weaker to missile fire, and more expensive.
Expensive? yes, but at S5 these are armour crackers. That's why most use them, but while many will die from other armies. You must remember that dwarves have T4 and that make a big difference, against anything with S3 (which is most core units) they'll only be wound the warriors on 5's. And this combined with a great save will make them a tough unit to shift.
But one good use of GW warriors is a flank attack unit. Basically you get a unit of warriors with HA, HW/Shields or IBreakers and then these recieve the charge. They should hold and thus next turn a charging unit of GW armed warriors in the flank will be enough to destroy or at least break most units.
I would have my HW/S in front of my GW and wait for the enemy to charge the HW/S unit (or they charge the enemy) and then flank the enemy with the GW.
BTW, King Ulrik.. Is that the grim reaper in your avatar?
