Hi all, I'm considering dwarfs as a new army after selling my brettonians and wanted to know what you would recommend to do a "ranger" or "mining expedition" force? I really like the theme behind it and want to build an army based around it, so any basic list building or tactical advice is welcome!
Greetings and welcome young beardling!
Rangers and miners eh? Well both armies have their strongpoint and weakpoints.
alas, the ranger army isn't a real possibility anymore in any regard other than theme. with a single unit of rangers available to us, we can't really do much. This however can be fixed with the use of bugman (only balanced special character in the dwarf army book ) who lets you take an additional unit of longbeard rangers.
The other problem is the fact that we are the only army in war hammer that have a RANKED scouting unit. Now when you first think about this you might think "awesome! i can have a ranked unit half way up the table before the game starts!". Then when you come to play this unit you realize that they have to set up behind or in cover... with M3.
Its not a nice situation to be in and that’s not even considering finding a piece of terrain large enough to hide a large unit of ranked dwarves behind/in
The miner army however... now this is where the magic happens.
with the limit of 1 miner unit per army removed this edition we can actually field as many of these as we like. 3 20 strong units of great weapon wielding dwarves turning up behind the enemy? Yes please!
Its a very fun and fluffy army, but better be aware of the pitfalls.
1: miners can't charge or march the turn they arrive
this is a pretty bad one. when you arrive on the table you can only move 3£ in on the turn they arrive, meaning the enemy will have an entire turn to get some distance on them or shoot at them.
2: miners cost special choices
this tends to mean we lack war machines. However the "fluffy" war machine of choice for miners happens to be the rare organ gun. So not so bad ^_^
3: Small armies on the table turn 1
Better be careful with this one, against armies such as bretonians (insert irony here) who can cross the table in 2 turns you could be cleared off the table before all your miners arrive on the table. A risky prospect to say the least.
I however look forwards to your time on the forums and hope to see any lists you do come up with

[16:20] <@Kaiser-> I know he is.
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> He usually is.
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> Sometimes it's intentional.
[00:01] <+zubus> i love you, ya skirt wearin nothern monkey! ^_^
I agree with Arky.
A Miner themed army could be very fluffy, fun and effective on the battlefield.
I would imagine you would have a Dwarf Lord (although you could have a Runelord that evokes the spirit of the earth with an anvil) possibly with Rune of Brotherhood although this would make him not able to have shieldbearers.
It would need the obligatory BSB thane (possibly Strollaz's Rune if you have your 'on board' army an aggressive one and not a shooting one) and a Runesmith or 2. Maybe and extra Thane with Ro Brotherhood and Axe of Pain to saunter onto the board latter on as well (although you would then be quite character heavy).
For Core you would either have several Warrior units and Longbeard units to use a Strollaz's rune or lots of shooting to annoy the enemy till the Miners arrive.
For Special you could get 2 bolt throwers (if your doing the ranged army) or Hammerers (elite Miners) to be with the Lord and Surge forward with the rest as Miners. Alternatively you could get 4 units of Miners (scary!).
Rare should either be empty (for the assaulting army, gyrocopters in a cave would seem a tad odd) or chocked full of Organ Guns and/or Flame Cannons (for the shooting army).
Thanks alot for the input everyone, it was very helpful and I gotta say I'm getting pretty stoked about this army. I'm currently working on a 1,250 list for a tournament coming up this weekend! *yikes! ;o So any advice on that will be welcome. But even tho I'm restricted models wise I think I can put up a good fight with whats available. So keep a look out for it! haha
already posted, have a look.
