I've played dwarves for about 6 months now and i boast a pretty strong army
i recently bought a pack of slayers because the battle for skull pass set included 1 only
i didn't want the dragon slayer because it coulden't join any other unit i owned and always got killed by magic or shooting.
I am now however running into the same problem with my slayers unit.
next to that i'm gonna end up fighting high elves (my friend is starting them) and these with their always strike first will pwn my slayers in cc as well as shooting.
I need strategies on using slayers in general, and fighting high elves.
Slayers need to desperately avoid getting in close with blademasters. They'll rarely, if ever win that fight. Shoot that pansy elves, that's what crossbows are for. As for other elves, if they're str 3 you may be worth fighting them (toughness 4 goes a long way young dawi.)
You may need to just take a large unit and hope for the best against high elves in melee.
In general though, remember a few points:
- Master Rune of Grugni: This baby is a slayers best friends and more that worth taking if the slayers are important to the army
- Immune to Psychology means they have to kill each and every slayer. For some units this isn't easy and the slayers will get and opening eventually. Also, placing them in front of your army promises shots going to them that they won't run from (also see above for good combo.)
- For CC, they're a bit specialized. Don't waste them on normal enemies (warriors do just fine) rather, do your best to get them in with monsters and other high toughness beasts.
- They're the funnest unit in the dwarf army (if not the game) remember this and have fun.

I play a complete slayer army, just started again after a 12 month lay off and came up against a new High Elf army for my return match and they are hard guys to beat epecially with them always striking first and fighting in 3 ranks when charged.
But your dwrafs will be able to counter their magic and shooting quite well and the slayers if fielded in a large enough block will be able to hold their own....my guys pounded the pointy eared scum by trun 4 so it can be done.
Keep the faith
Like librisrogue says, MRoGrugni are their best friend. Helps them keep their numbers till they get into combat(or rather the opponent get to them ). Infact that banner is starting to become one of my favourites overall.

ok guys thanks for the help ill be looking to buying more slayers asap
Personally i rarely use the slayers in small games, and even less often against high elves. On the other hand I've found a good way of looking at slayers that makes it more tolerable when they die in droves. Think of them as a swarm instead of a unit of dwarves, because that is basically what they are. In fact seen that way they are the best swarm in the game. Better Ws, S,T, W, A and they dont lose wounds if they lose combat. Oh, and slayer weapons....
Against high elves i suggest ironbreakers, although hammerers could do the job as well. Most elven armies are simply unable to get through ironbreaker armour except with bolt throwers, so even with 18 attacks or so from spearment hitting first, they rarely get more than 1-2 casualties. put a thane in there and goodbye unit.
Also fun is bringing 2 gyrocopters and killing their bolt throwers with them. really annoys elves, can't figure out why.
