Just out of curiosity, what is the one rune (not runic combo) that you must have in your army, no matter how big or small the game, and why?

well... the rune i try to take in pretty much EVERY list i field would probably be the master rune of grungi. that 5+ ward has saved my arse numerous times in my wargaming life be it from magic missiles, bowfire or warmachines.
the rune i do happen to have in every list (more out of habit than need) is the rune of stone. so cheap... yet so useful ^_^

Guess i should have put mine in too. personally the one Rune to rule them all is the MR of Challenge. For 25 pts, it always makes its points back one way or another, and is great against skirmishers and fast cav (or archers) who would rather not be in combat with your blocks of infantry. Also useful at making mages and flying units run away for a turn or two. For sheer annoyance factor, this is the best rune the dwarfs have.

rune of accuracy. i'm a grudge throwing maniach with my dwarves and so i love the rune of accuracy.
i think hands down rune of stone is the #1 used rune in the game. seriously for 5 points it's an amazing addition, i've had so many lists where i'm like, hrm. i got 6 points left. hey lets throw a rune of stone on somone there we go.
now that i mainly play TK, i keep getting situations where i have 5 or 6 points left in a list and i'm like dang it i have NOTHING i can do... (so i throw a random musician in somewhere)

There are 2 number 1 runes for me xD 1) Master Rune of Balance-This thing is completely worth the 50 pts up against a magical army such as high elves. You get to take 1 spell power dice away from your opponent and add 1 to your dispel dice. Just take a runesmith with a GW, stick him in a group of melee troops and he becomes worth the points for melee and will save your troops' asses with 2 extra dispel dice and 1 less spell dice for your enemy. 2) The one everyone seems to agree on, the rune of stone!! This baby is the only rune (i think) that you're able to have 1 of it on multiple pieces of armor on multiple characters. It could make the difference of you having a 100pt hero in the game to wipe out enemies for one more turn.......ONLY 5pts!!!!
ya you could equip 3 heroes with the rune of stone only for armor runes. it is the only one that is allowed for multiples
Runes for Characters
#1 RO Stone +1AS for 5 pts way too good to pass up
#2 RO Warding MR1 to character & unit makes it a cheap magic defense option
#3 MR Dismay - good against low leadership opponents
Runes for Warmachines
#1 RO Forging (for Cannons) - love this one
#2 RO Penetrating (for Bolt Throwers) - get two for S8 and add an Engineer
Runes for Std. Bearers
#1 MR Stromni Redbeard - If i can afford it
#2 MR Grungi - 5+ WS within 6"
Favourite Runic Weapons
#1 MR Swiftness & 2 Runes of Fury; Strike first with +2 attacks
#2 MR Kragg the Grimm w. 2 Runes of Cleaving
Master Rune of Grungi: it has always made up it's points worth... if I make 4 ward saves against missiles for my Hammerers, I will have made up it's points.
Rune of Stone: that +1 AS is worth it...
Rune of Snorri: I always try to take this... that extra +1 to hit, especially when you roll like me, is priceless...
