Now, I dont play dwarves as you can probably tell from my avatar. But I have a friends that does, and he keeps nagging me that Dark Elves are broken. I think he is using that as an excuse for losing. To try to prove this, his slayer unit game after game does nothing. They just die. I am thinking he is using them wrong. My idea is they would make a perfect flanking unit for the dwarves, considering they are a unit nobody wants to deal with in CC. He uses them for other purposes. What are slayer normally used for in a dwarf army?
Slayers make great missile targets, since they have no Armor save. Dark elves have great missile fire to take the unit out quickly.
Slayers will almost alway go last in HtH combat, with no armor save, they do die quickly.
The key to using slayers vs Dark Elves is to screen them with other units that have AS, and then charge into a flank of the enemy with them.
dwarf slayers act pretty much like a swarm in any other army. they are there to tie up the enemy and protect a flank. they are more useful against a CC army than a gunline obviously, and are pretty much useless against really fast opponents. personally i only take them in very large games.
Oi! Get off me beard!
I personally think 1 powerful slayer is good because he doesn't draw much for attention and could take down large creatures or even the intimidation that a dragon slayer waiving a big axe over his head should be enough to slow progress on a side of the board.
We will remain, until the battle is won: BROTHERS OF METAL!!!!
I've been having some success with just a plain Dragonslayer (no runic weapons at all) running around next to my unit with the Master Rune of Grungni. Most players down here have a rather unhealthy fear of Slayers and tend to focus on it alot. I've had a 2nd gen Slann devote two of his magic phases in trying to kill the Slayer, and while he's focusing on the Slayer, my big block of Dwarves are inching closer and closer.
Deception is the key.
Slayers are amazing at holding up small elite expensive unit. they are also very good fighters, but against S4 enemy, they die in droves. Throwing a hero in there will still assure victory for the ost part though.
Dark elves however eat slayers for breakfast. Repeating crossbows and reaper bolt throwers are just scary. Magic kills them dead fast too. and you're and elf, so you run circles around them. my advice to your friend is drop the slayers and take some other unit if at all possible.
Though blaming slayers alone for defeat is a little much.
May the Emperor forgive you, for his servants cannot.
Dark Elves are really the ultimate slayer killers. Repeater x-bow men can hail shots oto them and even move slowly backwards while shooting. T4 is good but the lack of armour means the slayers get slowly slaughtered. Slayers really hold their own against hordes and chaos (from what I've seen).
Suggest he spends his points on a more heavily armoured unit that is more likely to get into combat and start pulling elves apart.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
Either he should have ranged units of his own provide covering fire for the Slayers, or bring in some Miners to tunnel behind lines (which should be able to give Dark Elves something else to worry about while the Slayers slowly creep in) or he could do both.
By the way, does he use war machines? If so, which ones and how effective are they for him?
