So i'm dusting my dwarfs off again for the first time in almost a year and my first game was 1k vs lizzard men. I ended up with 2 units of skinks on my flanks and 1 in front covering 3 kroxigors. Needless to say they danced around me and laid waste to me war macheins and the game ended in a solid loss for me. What is your suggestion for dealing with armies like this? BTW I did have an organ gun and it got one turn of shooting before they went down in to hail of poison darts! Same story with my cannon aswell. haha
Any advice is welcome!
I didnt think poison effected artillery, just their crew. I might be wrong on that. However if Im right the using the law of averages he'd need to have shot like 54 shots to kill the 3 crew. 54 shots hitting on a 6 means he poisons 9 times. Randomized between the gun and crew mean 3 hit the crew.
And I just wanted to say "use an organgun!" 0.0
Pinkus, the hits don't have to be poisoned hits per se, a lot of hits, bunch of wounds and bad amoursaving throw will result in the loss of your crew too, if those skinks hit enough.
yeez... well uhm.. I can't think of anything, to be honest. Your missleunits will have a harder time hitting enemy scouts and off course they will just run around your blocks.
Yes, wel.. the only thing to use was an organgun. There is a great rune that gives warmachines hard cover ( -2 to hit ) but an organgun can't bloody hell get runes.
Grudge thrower! Thats it ^^
It can get the rune of whatever it's called ( the first one I think it is ) so will not be shot down as easily. 1 good hit from a grudge thrower ( rune of accuracy, rune of accuracy!!! ) and byebye fragile skinks.
Hitting on a 4
Hitting on a 5
hitting on a 4
10 shots, hits 5 times.
Str 4 vs to2, you wound 4 times.
If they're outside their generals range they fail their panic check 45% of the time. But still a unit of 6 skinks will only poison 1 guy a turn.
But I was waying a str 3 shot will bounce off the unit on a 1-4 when you randomize, so unless he was letting poison wound his actual gun, the guy had to get incredibly lucky to kill an organ in 1 turn.
My best advice would be as had been said Grudge throwers would help here also giving your general a Master Rune of Challenge to force one of those units of skinks to either flee or charge should help some as well.
Thanks for the advice everyone. Yeah basically he had units of around 12 or so a piece I believe. I think he only caused 3 or 4 wounds on the crews but 6+ armor let me down lol. The whole army was fairly skink heavy with only 1 unit of 15 sorus warriors 3 Kroxigors, a skink priest, chameleon skinks and 2 decent sized units of skinks (one w/javilins and the other with blow pipes).
His unit needs to deploy completely out of line of sight of any of your units on the table, can only move 6 inches, then fire at 12 with a moving penalty. This means if you are still at long range (mostly likely), he cannot take multiple shots against you, or he will forfeit is poison.
(BS of 3, -1 moving, -1 long range is 6s. If he takes multiple shots it makes it 7s, and poisons do not work past 6s). that's means 12 shots averaging 2 6s.
Then has to randomize against the crew and warmachine, (1-4 machine 5-6 crew) for is hits.
Unless he had the luck of the ancients with him, it won't happen again.
Never deploy your organ gun on it's own. Pack it tight inbetween 2 units of infantry, and he will not be able to dance, or get to it without facing you. Any unit of ranked dwarves can face the onslaught of Kroxigors. They have a weak weaponskill, so the 9 attacks generally net 4 kills. 3 ranks, banner, outnumber and you wn without doing anything. Pick off the supporting units, and he his hammer units will bounce off your dwarves like they were an anvil.
The grudge thrower has a small template, not all that great against units that spread to maximim range.
I do believe you can poison on a 7 if you roll a 6 on your second dice roll. but anyway I'm thinking the terrain had alot to do with it. We had a dense village set up with plenty of houses to hide behind. I dont think I'll be getting trounced so badly next time. I'm still getting a feel for the more chess like tactics in fantasy as opposed to the all out brawl that i'm used to in 40k Thanks for all the advice tho!
