Ok, check 2000pts dwarf list or the like in army lists for my list, but has anyone any tips for defeating Cult of Ulric, should i just sit and shoot or do something clever?
Cult Of Ulric has a very non traditional style of play for empire. Very little shooting, but an excellent point for point infantry choice, along with solid Cavalry. the bound magic can be very tricky, pay attention to the spells he will use, and only dispel the troublesome ones.
The shooting game will definitly be in your advantage, but be ready to meet him in close combat on good terms. He can easely outnumber your combat units 2:1 or 3:1 if he uses alot of 10 man support units, so be very careful on your approach to the setup.
ok, i have some miners which can take out any seige weapons he has (he hides his models away but i think i glimpsed a cannon once) so should I let him come to me?
Always let them come to you. There are very few scenarios where a dwarf must haste himself forward, lest he sports an orange beard and crest. The organ gun will deal swiftly with any cavalry he may try to flank you with, miners are always a good thing to use against warmachines, especially if you have the anvil to back them up.
very few situations when he must yes... but there are times when it just feels soooooo right. there is nought what a cannon can do that a determined dwarf with a hammer can't.here are very few scenarios where a dwarf must haste himself forward
however, given the situation a defensive posture seems to be your best bet. however don't assume that means not moving. the cult of ulric has some VERY potent cavalry at its disposal and you'll have to be prepared to defend your flanks when possible be it through firepower (organ guns) or by turning to face your opponent.
i recommend playing a predominantly combat force (at least 2/3 of your points) but enough firepower to make it too dangerous to play the long battle against you

[16:19] <@Alzer> Arky's right though
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> I know he is.
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> He usually is.
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> Sometimes it's intentional.
[00:01] <+zubus> i love you, ya skirt wearin nothern monkey! ^_^
I wish there was a box formation!
I think your delving into the firepower / hand to hand battle here! I prefere fire power as i like to blow things up
Ah, but the look on your opponent's face when he's got Dwarf troopers 6" from his front line in round one. If he moved first, it should be quite possible to get in charges from the front and rear in round one - that's a minimum of 6" movement by your foe, Rangers in a good spot, Strollaz Rune and Oath and Honour. If you risk Ancient Power and get lucky, you can potentially get in 3 front charges and a rear charge - in round one, playing Dwarfs! That's the definition of "OMFGWTF".
Aha! I would value your opinion but you ahve a quote from the Evil one (my brother) in your Sig!
Ok that was a joke!
I don't have an anvil although when i sort out money troubles and have built up my 40k army it will probabaly be the next purchase.
Just to warn you, Brother Bludgutz, I don't have a cannon. I did have a DoW one, rationalised by the fact that alot of Ulricans end up mercenaries, and then stripped all the fancy detailing off'f the Empire Cannon, and about an inch off the end, and said it was the very basic model of cannon that Nuln says. Functional yet cheap, very Ulrican.
Anyway, that broke and I never bothered fixing it, and don't think I will. Blocks of Infantry, lots of Priests and some cavalry are much more fun.
