I had just recently purchased the Dwarf Battalion Box. As I am starting to assemble the pieces, I am now upon the decision of how do I want to build this first box. For these pieces, which would you all suggest? And right now, I have not decided which dwarven specialty I am going to go after, so, I am willing to take the advice of you elder dwarves out there.
And I am not afraid to mix and match units, as I will be picking up pieces down the road if I need to suppliment future army builds. So please, feel freet o drop as much advice as you can =)
i personally have 1 unit of both Warriors with GW and warriors with HWS
so as you have 24 warrior, 16 thunder and a cannon.
1st suggest you make cannon into organ gun, these things are beasts and a lovely addition to every type of dwarf army.
I would first off make 1 unit of 10 thunderers, and 1 unit of 20 warriors most likely with HWS, leaving the last 4 in bits. or using them with your 6 left over thunderer's to make a unit of 10 xbow equipped rangers. this gives you your starting 2 (for <2000 ) or 3 (for >2000 ) Core Units.
In the future i would suggest getting another box, of warriors bringing you up to a nice round 40. then make 20 HWS and 20 GW. I personally painted my HWS as the heads with long beards and painted them Grey, so they are my "long beards" giving you a unit with ST5 5+AS and STR4 3+AS, vs a str6 5+as and str3 3+as. (you can also just use them as hws guys later)
for future expansions:
Grab the 2 lord pack (BSB and Oathstone), Grudge thrower/2 bolt throwers and you got yourself a pretty decent starting list. or get another Battalion and the lords and you got a great starting army.
mild off topic rant but man can we please change the stupid cyclops thing from 0 ) to something else it's annoying having your points turn into 0)

Organ gun I can do =) I was doing some reading on the forums here, and everyone seemed to be playing them up as a very versatile piece.
And I am just posting to verify as I am new to some of the accronyms (sp?).
HWS = Hammer With Shield?
GW = ? (disregard, I just realized this was Great Weapon)
So, with this box, I will end up with...
1 Organ Cannon
10 thunderers (should I assume when a squad is mentioned, it has the full complimentary Musician/SB/Champ in it?)
20 HWS Warriors
And I do plan on picking up another box of warriors (possibly tomorrow).
sorry gonna try to toss a few of the most comon used Acronyms here for ya.
HWS = Hand weapon shield.
GW = Great weapon
AHW = additional Hand weapon
FC = full command ( Champion, Banner, Musician)
CC = close combat
BSB = Battle Standard Bearer
LO = Librarium Online
GW = Games workshop
for thunderers do not put in a command, it's not worth the points. if you feel you HAVE to have something, only thing i would put in is music. but even then proboly not with dwarfs.
so, just to clarify
I would make 20 hand weapon shield Dwarfs with full command
10 Thunderers with no command
1 Organ gun.
this gives you 465 points right off the bat.
throw in 2 chars (the 2 char pack i suggested) and beef them up a touch and you got yourself a viable 750 point army.
(2 quick character builds to top this army off for ya,) points in ()
Pistol, Shield, Rune of resistance, Rune of stone, Rune of warding. gives you a "tank" he has a 1+ re-roll able armor save in CC and 1 magic resistance
BSB; Rune of Cleaving, Rune of Fury, Rune of Snorri Spangelhelm, rune of stone
this guy is a staple in my army, he has 3+ armor save, 4 attacks at str 5 with +1 to hit. Very good unit killing character.
Dwarf Warriors (205)
20 Warriors with Hand Weapon and Shield, Full command
10 Thunderers (xxx)
Organ gun (xxx)
total points 747
(side note)The reason the thunderer's and Organ gun are xxx instead of numbers is we have to make sure not to post the raw point cost of any unit. i was able to post the point cost of the dwarf warriors because they had an upgrade and command included. Always be warry to not include point costs for unupgraded units OR for upgrades. EG i could not say "rune of stone is awsome for only 87372934 points you can get one! (obviously not that much) i could say "Rune of stone is awsome for only x points you can get one! This isn't LO's ruleing it is GW's rule so to not get LO into trouble we try not to post individual point costs.

In case your wondering what to do to buff this up to 1500 points. there are Hundreds of choices, it's here you kind of have to decide what your going to do with your army, are you going to gunline? foot slog? even mix?
here is a suggestion for an even mix
your next unit of warriors (with Great weapons) (225)
A Master engineer (give him Great weapon, master rune of gromril and rune of resistance) (124)
Grudge thrower (with rune of accuracy) (105)
put your ME (master engineer) with the Grudge thrower (GT) and you will have yourself arguably the most accurate war machine in the game, you can re-roll the Artillery AND scatter dice, can entrench the machine (-2 to shooting and charging units loose charge bonus) and the ME is DAMN hard to kill.
20 Hammerers (FC) (270 )
this will put you at around the 1470 mark, you can fiddle with upgrades on units to bring that up to 1500.
this army has some additional firepower (in the way of the GT and ME) and ALOT of killing power in your GW equipped warriors and your Hammerer's

I really appreciate the advice =) Looks like I will start removing the pieces from the sprues today and start having some real fun assembling!
Thunderers and warriors share the same body/head.
There are always plenty of weapon hands and shields in the frames to equip them so you can have already 2x15 (30 total with full commands) warriors, 10 thunderers, organ gun and a thane for your first games.
You can make one of those 15 longbeards too
So you will have to enlighten me on Thane...I've seen it mentioned a lot, but am not 100% sure what he is.
A thane is the strongest ( can be argued about though.. ) of Dwarfs heroes, with very nice CC stats and armour. Don't confuse this with the strongest of all dwarf characters, just strongest of the hero choices. Lords will kick his behind.
Thanes are ust like captains and commanders and stuff like that. You can make these short buggers very versatile. Make him a Tank, a killer who always strikes first, the always used by me dreaded combo of the runes of 'cleaving, snorri spangelhelm and fury' ( Against a regiment you get 4 attacks, hit on 2+ an wound most of the time on 2+. Don't throw 1's and byebye enemy front rank. Sadly, I still have the habit of missing, so combo's like this make it as hard as possible for me to miss. )Can you give shields to BSBearers? I don't think so but just to be sure. If you could he'd have a 1+ armoursave tooOriginally Posted by Hondor
while it is true they "share" they same body/head, the warriors i find are a bit more heavily armored then the thunder/quareller sprue. so grab the other warrior box, the twin thane box, and your ready to go.
