Welcome to Librarium Online!
I've been thinknig for a while now about a Fantasy army and have been looking at Dwarfs and High Elves. I think i'm starting to swing more towards the Bearded Wonders!
I was looking for advice on:
My main oppostion will be 2 Orc and Goblins armies and a Brettonian army.
- What units to buy
- A 1,000 point army list
- Whether Miners are actually good for anything....No-one seems to use them!
All advice welcome Cheers
Cannons are good against heavily armoured cavalry and Organ Guns will completely demolish an Orc and Goblin Army.
Miners have two outcomes, absolute usefulness or complete pointlessness.
Miners are flexible but have to come in at the right time to be useful.
Ah the Dwarfs, how wonderful they are.
I would start by getting yourself some warriors (I think every dwarf army should have at least one unit or 20+ warriors with hand weapon and shields) for a core unit and their price they are awesome. A box of Thunderers/Quarrellers is also invaluable. (if you want to go thunderers or Quarrellers is really up to you, they are both great but for different reasons.)
All the Warmachines are great for various reasons. If you are good at guessing range, a Grudge Thrower would be great against Orcs and Goblins, especially if they take units of goblins. Those large, soft units would really suffer from a grudge thrower. The Flame Cannon would also do well against Orcs and Goblins, helping to cause panic tests and denying trolls of their regeneration save.
Against Bretonnians cannons would be particularly nice with a head on shot to a unit of knights in lance formation.
Miners? I like 'em. They are versitile. They are a great way to swing the tide of battle mid game with a flank or rear charge to an enemy unit already engaged in combat. Also, a small unit would be great for taking out enemy warmachines and claiming table quarters. If you keep you miners in mind while manouvering, you can get the best use of them. Try and get as many combats to take place near table edges. This way Miners can get into the action as soon as possible.
If you have the money, the Dwarf army box is a great start. It gives you nice large units to start with. And that is good considering Dwarfs need combat resolution on their side.
Hope that helps. And if you disagree, that is fine, in a game of strategy I think it is natural for people to disagree on what is best.
Thanks for the advice guys!
I'm thinking about having maybe 2 block of 20 or 25 units of Warriors with hand weapons and shields. I love Ironbreakers so maybe 19 of them with a character. I'm thinking of a 1,500 to 2,00 list. How many charcters should i take?
One final thing what's the save for Gromril Armour?
Heavy armour = 5+
Gromgril armour = 4+
so your characters ( except slayers ) with shield and all ironbreakers have a friking 2+ save in CC
I myself always use a block of warriors, a smaller block of longbeards and I've just bought a second block of warriors. In bigger games I go for the Ironbreakers. You just got to love that great save!
1000 pts, I don't go above 2 characters ( thane as general, a slayer to help win some combats or a runesmith for magic defence if I go against a magicheavy army ( VC VC VC!!! )
1500 - 2000 pts I would go all the way, 4 characters. 1 Thane, or a lord if you go 2000 pts so you can take one. fully loaded up with runes as the general.
Second character another thane as secondary heroe or BSB.
third a runesmith, always need one. Don't rely on just your 4 dispeldice.
fourth another runesmith, or a slayer to kill some big things, small units, warmachinecrews or help a block win a combat by killing some rank & file.
So you could actually make a Thane with a 1+ save with upgrades only costing 7 points ( Shield and RoStone)?
I'm thiking of writing a 1,500 point to 2,000 point list very soon. Not sure about Thanes though. I'm thinking of 2x25 units of Warriors, 1x19 of Ironbreakers and 1x19 Longbeards. Put a Thane in all the Ironbreakers and Longbeards and a BSB and a Runesmith somewhere else?
Anyone know any good build for the types of Thanes? (would like 1 to have 1+ AS)
Yeah, a great Thane build that is not that overexpensive and is awesome against rank and file troops and not that bad against other heroes, monsters and wizards.
Rune of snorri spangelhelm
Rune of cleaving
Rune of fury ( optional, can be replaced with rune of swiftness for Always strike first )
Rune of stone
Gromgril armour, shield and rune of stone give a 2+ armoursave against missilefire ( no problem when you are in a unit ) and 1+ in CC.
rune of snorri spangelhelm, cleaving and fury give you 4 Str 5 attacks that hit on 2+ against almost any rank and file troop and 3+ against all heroes possible ( unless they have some cheesy magic item that lowers your WS or something )
Are miners worth it? Well against orc and goblins hell yeah... well more against goblins as if im not mistaken dont know if the rule has changed but if a unit just "pops out " of know where x inchies from a unit of goblins with fanatics then the fanatics get thrown out in a random direction, worth it to me.... 75 points of the enemy wasted not including how many random kills the fanatics got on their own side.
With fanatics, as soon as an enemy unit comes within 8" of the Goblin unit harboring the fanatic it is released. The Orc and Goblin player does get to choose from which point of the goblin unit the fanatic comes. So they could aim the fanatic at the miners. But if the unit of miners was small enough that you didn't mind loosing it than that would be a great tactic. I had never thought of that.
