I was wondering, what army list is best at beating a dwarf army? Thanks for voting!
I think it all really depends on the generals in question, more so than the armies. However, I have heard a few Dwarf players having troubles with Ogre Kingdoms. I've never played against them though.
I would think armies which are mobile and have a lot of long range fire power would be problematic. The Dwarfs are tough in hand to hand and near impossible to break, but if you can pick them apart from far away you might soften them up for an effective charge or force them to maneuver their forces in a way that weakens their defense and takes away their shooting advantage. Depending on the composition of the army, magic might be a non-issue with so many dispel bonuses available. I'd guess that Wood Elves would be the best against Dwarfs, but I don't have any hands-on experience to go by.
SADly, the Skaven massacre dwarves. They have as much shooting as we do but have 4 times meat shields. They also get to many flank charges for static resolution to be good enough and can almost never be run down by us (they flee 2D6+1 and we pursue 2D6-1).
Against Skaven however even our normal warriors can stand against their elite stormvermin. All dwarfwarriors can cut Skaven warriors to bits, even crews, and they are very very easily to panic ( flamecannon, flamecannon!! ) with our shooting. What kind of shooting do the Skaven have that is very effective by the way? I hear it a lot, but I have the Skavenbook myself and the only shooty I can come up with is Jezzails and the warplightining cannon. Both are expensive and the Jezzails have their whopping high BS 3 ( xD ) with which they hit on 5's about always.
As one said on the forum, dwarfs live the same fate as they do in the fluff. When the enemy comes charging towards them in a mad rush with no tactical plan, the dwarfs usually hold their own, but if you outmanouvre them and pick them off one by one, they are going down. Woodelfs are best for this kind of thing, because they are allergic to frontal CC and depend on picking off enemies and flank/rearcharging with 2 units at the same time.
I'd have to go with Wood Elves. Fairly effective long range shooting, and it's extremely difficult for Dwarfs to force them into a combat.
A. They charge you, and whipe you out in one or two CC phases or over-run you if you flee.
B. You charge them, kill one if ure lucky, then they whipe you out i one or to CC phases or over-run you if you run.
And it gets even worse for you if they have a brusier, tyrant, maneater, or butcher in or near the squad that your fighting with
and stay away from leadbelchers, they are basically walking organ guns except for the fact that they have to take a turn to re-load after every shot
Thats just generally my experiance playing with and against ogre kingdoms
I don't know about that really.. I have never played against Ogres, but I believe they have something like Ws3, Str4 and T4? * checks GW site * jup. Even our standard warriors have higher WS, our ld is one of the highest in the game so little to worry about fear and we even have the same toughness! With static combat res of 20 strong warrior units you should be able to deal with them, and 20 strong unit of longbeards and ironbreakers wih a loaded up thane should cut a bloody swathe of destruction. Looking at the ironguts profile, they aren't that tough either, their greatest power lies in their str 6 attackes, but high elf white lions have also got strenght 6, and ASF :p
they are also not that hard to panic. Because most Ogre units consist of something like 4 ogres, you only have to shoot down 1 to make them take a panic test. ld 7 is about a 50% chance of failing.
Actually, most Ogre units (here im talking about Bulls), consist of atleast 6. Why? Because it increases the effectiveness of their bullcharge. In addition to that, they have the ironfist.
Its absolutely vital that you get some casualties in your shooting fase. A single model can make the difference.
I agree with the above that both Wood Elves and Skavens is a bit harder than other troops. But they both have disadvantages which one must use. A Gyrocopter is just a fantastic piece of equipment here. Perhaps not to make them run from panic, but to cut them in numbers.
And just pray that something happens to their ratling guns. Nasteehh
I smell D3 damage boltthrowers against Ogres :p take a pair, or 2 pair if you've got enough points and start shooting with str 6 against T4 and D3 wounds ^^
Especially funny against skaven.. flamecannons! 1 kill = panictest. Shoot at some slaves and you can make a large amount of troops flee! Clanrats can have ld 8, if they have 3 ranks left, but slaves only 5 :p That's not good odds.
