One of my best friends plays dark elves, so naturally I need to make an army list to beat him since he is my main opponent. He usually uses a lot of corsairs and a couple bolt throwers, as well as a sorceress and an assassin or two. He also uses five cold knights, and crossbowmen. What should my army list look like for 500 points? 1000 points? 1500 points? 2000 points?
well, i am a Dark Elf player. one of my good friends who I play a lot playes Dwarfs. If the DE player is using a lot of shooting then one good thing to do is make an almost completly shooty army. Trust me, your shooting is way better than DE's. Thunderers are amazing with their strength 4 shooting. Use your war machines and take engineers. I would get one good unit of melee units, maybe Longbeards or Ironbreakers and put your general in there and just keep him back. They will be well protected (especially the ironbreakers). Dont take banners in your thunderer units... if he does get into close combat with them, they wont survive long, so you dont wanna give him an easy chance at 100 extra VP's by capturing a banner. Now, going against Cold One Knights, take them out first! It will be his heaviest hitting unit and highest armour save unit. Not to mention they will get into close combat faster since it is calvary. If he only takes five units then really, one kill from a cannon shot or bolt thrower shot will make them take a panic test. Remember, if you kill 25 percent of an enemy unit through shooting they must take a panic test. Even if they pass you can easily kill all or most of a small unit like that of 5 knights with one round of concentrated war machine fire. Place your thunderers in front of the corsairs... take a few units, but only one line. 2 units of 10 would be great. 10 accross, just one rank. If he takes a war hydra, then equip the rune (i forget the name) that makes the war machine you place it on flaming attacks. that way the hydra will not get to use his Regenerate.
Darkelves have no answer to the anvil of doom. I haven't found an army it works better against than DEs.
Yes they do. It's called Shadowblade. You can deploy him in a enemy unit or war machine. The anvil of doom is a war machine. Every time I have played agianst my friends Dwarves I have deployed Shadowblade by turn two (since the rules state you cannot deplou him the first turn). If I started the game first the he only got one turn with the Anvil because I would challenge his runelord and would be in close combat with the Anvil. Shadowblade comes with a Potion of Strength and I would use it during the challenge. He has killing blow and has an item which takes away one attack from his apponent in a challenge..... he also has Always Strikes First. So with the Potion of Strength it would be 4 attacks at strength 7, WS 10. I kill his runelord everytime then proceed to finish off the Anvil. Works like a charm. Shadowblad is expensive however so it would behoove you to try and kill him before the game is over to get the 300 VP. Just don't forget he has a 5+ ward save... but no armour save. He also has a "on death" reaction using the small template that could kill any of your units thats inside the circle where he died at.
Before you all start saying noooo you cant deploy him there, Ive heard all the arguments and some pretty decent ones... but those arguments were debumked when there was an official reply about the subject from a GW Moderater in an official FAQ saying that Shadowblade can indeed infiltrate the AoD. So if you play Dark Elves again be prepared to try and counter this. Maybe deploy a Dragon/Daemon Slayer next to your Anvil to charge him once he gets out of the challenge. He will most likely still kill your Anvil, but at least you have a shot at killing him... but he still has ASF so even on the charge with a Dragon/Daemon Slayer you might just give him free VP's lol.
Yeah - if you play with special characters dark elves pwn the anvil. But only if you play with special characters - otherwise it's very effective against them.
And you could always spend 15 points to make your runelord immune to killing blow/poison in which case he could give shadowblade a run for him money perhaps even having a slight edge.
The only thing you have to do against a dark elf army is making a gunline. Dark elves might be fast and shooty (though not as shooty as dwarfs) they cannot take any damage. 1 shot of a thunderers will most likely kill the dark elf that was hit. so if you were to face the guy in any battle, I'd say take 2 units of 10 thunderers with shields, 2 bolt throwers with engineers, both r o burning, and one with r o penetrating (BT's are to kill the hydra, and afterwards you can kill those corsairs because he doesnt have his +2 AS to shooting) an organ gun, to counter his shades, and some hammerers and warriors. Also might want a runesmith with master rune of balance (this is a real pain in the ass to dark elf players) if you are facing an army with 2 or even three sorceresses.
Hope this 'll help
I'll try that! I did a shooty army with tomb kings and it totaly crushed his army so I'll try it with dwarfs! I recently played against empire and lizardmen this weekend and a shooty list did not work well for me! And about the anvil of doom... It got crushed by chameleon skinks before I could even use it! Against lizardmen I was hanging my dead dwarfs from my fake trees on the battlfield as a joke... pretty soon the two large trees were full of dead dwarfs. So I'll be looking forward to playing against dark elves instead! Wow, I replied late.
a good way to protect your anvil is to play some rangers or a small unit of warriors. i too have been the victim of chameleon and this is the fix I've come up with, also skaven tunneling teams can be just as bad
