Depends on what army you are fighting
In one of the last games that I had I used a small squad of slayers that seemed to be a waste of points as, despite me best efforts, where shot down before they could reach CC
Just wondering what you thoughts are as I think that other special units would serve me better than the slayers
It depends on whom you are fighitng of course, but if an enemy army opens up aon concentrates on your slayers that means other units are going ot get thru.
Generally i don't like slayers, but they can be very useful. If you have trouble getting them into combat you could use the MR of Grungni on a unit of longbeards or something similar and sit them next to the slayers. I rarely choose them because there are just so many special choices you could use that generally perform better (GT and hammerers for example).
Never played them (Or anything warhammery so my opinion is immediately invalid, but I'm going to state it anyways. :p ), but I have to agree with the above poster that there's just so many other appealing options, though I'd rather have Ironbreakers myself ...but that's an entirely different discussion, though I'm also musing about the benefits of Miners too... which, essentially, just means that compared to all of the options in the special section, Slayers, while having some appeal, just aren't that appealing compared to...
Now if only those grief stricken dwarfs had a little sense and could skirmish...
Slayers are awesome for so many reasons, unfortunately most of them are to do with the fluff and their appearance, however being Unbreakable, and Slayer axes make them pretty useful in certain situations.
Effective-wise most of the other special choices have more to offer the general. One option, to give them a bit more longevity, is to have them close to a BSB with the rune that gives a ward save against shooting (can't remember which one) at least it ensures at least SOME of them end up in combat.

That would be the MR of Grungni , and the good thing about it is you don't even need a BSB to put in on, just put it on a units magical banner.
I hate the fact they have no armour. If the enemy has any magic or shooting then they drop like flies. For this reason i have only used them once.
However in this one game they performed brilliantly.
1000pts vs warriors of Chaos.
Essentially I deployed them in a long thin line in the centre of the board. To their right 25 Warriors with a Thane to their left a small unit of 10 Longbeards.
The slayers held a Chaos Knight charge and allowed the Long Beards to flank chaerge them while my warriors routed a unit of Chaos Warriors.
In the end the slayers and longbeards were destroyed (long beards got rear charged by Maureders) but not before my warriors ran down the Chaos Warriors and got into position to threaten the Knights of Chaos in the flank.
Essentially they are excellent if you have enough of them and want to perform a Battle of Cannae tacitc (thin but unbreakable centre strong flanks).
I would suggest taking Slayers without any upgrades except for a Giant Slayer. The Giant Slayer excepts challenges to reduce the number of slayers that die in the first round of combat.
I think Slayer characters are probably a massive waste of points (I actually took a Dragon Slayer it did nothing except die, and I could have probably doubled my slayer regiment without him!).
I am facing Empire next week and I am considering taking a unit of twelve slayers and a unit of 10 thunderers to protect one flank against his pistolers. I am hoping that the combination of unbreakable infantry and powerful musket weaponry will be enough to see off his horsemen.

myself i always use a block of 10 slayers. 99% of the time they die, but they tie up the unit attacking them for a few turns. (somehow i always survive with 1, got attacked by a 7 wide unit of HE Sword masters they killed 9 in that turn, but that 1 always stays around.)

Personally i love slayers, though they dont really do what they are supposed to do. i usually just field a unit of 10 including a giant slayer, just because they're cool (only 2000+). A dragonslayer is actually really useful, dor just 50 pts. it can walk around, marchblock people, and if you want you can charge him into a combat to get some extra CR points. He can hold up an enemy unit for a quiet a few turns (most troops have S3 so they wound him on 6's and he doesnt care if he gets beaten by 3 or 5 or 10000 CR points because he is unbreakable) which breaks up an enemy line entirely. Even though he dies every single battle, ive found him very useful in almost every battle.
I would just recommend not taking any weapon runes on your slayer, and never field a unit of slayers larger than 15 with FC. Ive seen some armies having 2 units of 25 slayers with FC. It didnt work... at all. the opponent could just run around those blocks. and after a while there were only a few slayers left due to shooting. A smart opponent will just take out that unit piece by piece.
A unit with only 15 slayers doesnt seem like a real threat to many opponents so they shoot your hammerers/ironbreakers/thunderers instead.
