Ok me and another guy in our local club are having a friendly 'discussion' on how bolt throwers should be fielded. He says that they should be fielded as basic as possible costing 90 points for 2 with no engineer or runes for weight of fire. I say that you should just take one with engineer with runes of penetrating and burning for increased accuracy and chariot killing (or chariot type units). The discussion is mainly revolving around honing our army lists for tournaments.
I just wondered what peoples thoughts are and how you would field them for tournaments
one boltthrower with str 7 would be very much worth its points if it gets a hit off.
against chariot heavy armylists id suggest even adding an engineer. otherwise, the other guy has a point. bolters being cheap is what makes them stand out in the dwarf list. still some runes are just too good to pass on, especially if youknow what enemies you will be expecting. (flaming attacks against wood elves? hell yes!)
well thats the point. for a tournament army you want to be able to take units that can stand up to a variety of opponents. O feel that having a more accurate bolt thrower that can cause more wounds to flammable units and destroy chariots is more useful than two basic ones. Of course they are also to be used with other war machines too!
I like to have 2, each with Penetrating and Burning. I then add Seeking to one just in case someone shows up with a Dragon/Manticore/Pegasus.
I always add engineers with BP for the extra BS.
i love bolt throwers, i love the options runes give, and i love trying different runes.
rune of +strength is definetly my favorite!
higher then 7 would be a bit much though
I think the seeker rune is also a well spent addition as well as the engineers.
i have one personal rule: only use engineers on the expensive bolters
last battle i had a decoy bolt thrower (up front) with the selfdestruct rune, that was a really good laugh.
actually i loved it so much i switched to playing the most selfdestructive goons around (Goblins)
I would say always give the bolt thrower an engineer, the increase in BS increases the chance of you BT actually hitting. One - at least - should always be given a RoPenetrating to make it viable to take out chariots, war machines or high T multi-wound monsters.
Agreed. The Bolt Thrower is the one War Machine that needs an Engineer. Cannons and Stone Throwers are subject to the whim of dice rolling and good guessing.
I usually only take one Bolt Thrower because I prefer to spend my points on more troopers, but invariably I take an Engineer and a Rune of Penetrating. If there's a second Bolt Thrower, it's Engineer, Rune of Penetrating and Rune of Burning. The S7 is what sets our Bolt Throwers apart from the Elves' weedy wooden versions; however, if it's not going to reliably hit anything it might as well be S1.
I always take the Rune of Penetrating because the S7 turns it into a sniper's artillery piece. It will always be shooting at the Toughest targets. There are better War Machines available for taking out massed troopers (Grudge Throwers) or blocks of well-armored troopers (Cannon).

Brrr i just checked the new armybook and see those engineers cost 15 points...
if you dont use one for every bolter im going to beat you up!
anyhow extra crewman and extra BS for the machine is well worth it for a bolter i would say
digger I'm currently building up orcs and goblins too. we are doing a warbands Lustria campaign so its ideal for starting up a new force! I've a goblin hero on a chariot and all fast cavalry (wolves and spiders) for 250pts. Should be fun whizzing around the battlefield with a mad goblin!
Good to see most people go with engineers and deck out the bolt throwers! I'm new to 2000pts so its helpful to get feedback on making up that all important 'take all comers' list.
Engineer on every bolter the +1 BS is to good to pass up.
ME on Grudge thrower. getting the abillity to re-roll both artillery and scatter (Rune of accuracy) is to good to pass up.
Putting Rune of Pen on bolters is amazing not only are you getting higher strength going through blocks but you can pop chariots and high T easier.
remember 1 higher St = 1 more rank you can go through wounding on a 2.
