well i'm making my first 1k list and i have enough points left over for either 10 thunderers or 2 cannons. What would you guys choose and why? thunderers seem good because with shields they'll be more mobile + can reform to fight. Cannons seem like they could be better but are more unreliable and i don't have points to rune them up (i've already put in my list an organ gun and 2 blocks of warriors and 1 of longbeards).
I'd take the thunderers, mainly because they don't blow up.
They can lay down good fire, 10 str 4 shots with +1 to hit, and when the enemy gets close, they can indeed reform as a pretty effective combat unit, tougher than a lot of infantry from other races.
But I'm not that good with guessing with the cannon anyway, I never take a cannon anymore, and without runes the chance of it blowing up is too great for me
For a 1k list, the Thunderers would add much needed troops - but similarly the points could be better spent on 2 bolt throwers and the remainder used to bulk up your other units.

Maybe another option is instead of taking 2 cannons you could take one with the rune of forging, that way you have 1 relatively reliable choice. Although personally i prefer Bolt Throwers over cannons because of the simple fact that I have horrible luck with my cannons.
If you do take bolt throwers i prefer to take engineers and one with a Rune of Penetrating and one with RoP and the Fiery Rune.
bolt throwers do look nice but i don't have the models yet and want to play these guys at 1k abit before i go spending more cash. I think when i get a chance to go down to my club i'm going to try out a list with the thunderers and a list using 1 canon with runes and using my left over 90 points to beef up my thane and maybe throw in a slayer if i can afford it to hang around behind my lines or flank
