It seems to me that while dwarves are good in CC, they have a weakness in that they cannot protect their flanks very well. Without their lack of much mobility, it seems that cavalry would easily be able to hit the flank of one of the end CC units, and without a rank bonus, even the dwarves have trouble holding. How do you protect your flanks?
Some ideas I have come up with (don't seem like they're much good):
-Put a small, shallow unit of slayers that would be a pain for enemies to go all the way around (Too vulnerable to missle fire)
-Put an individual character (cheap) next to the flank of your end CC unit
-Use a table edge (but you can only really protect one end of your army this way)
-If you are going to be keeping your army still (which I see the merit of, but want to try an offensive army), put an organ gun on ur flank
Please, none of these seem to be very good, how can I protect my flanks (expecially if I am planning to be offensive)

Use some kislevite mounted units to tie up your flanks. They are very good and very fast. I know a dwarf player who always brings kislevites to games now and he does very well with them.
Hmm.. protecting your flanks. The easiest way it to anchor it with stubborn or unbreakable units, these two types are more than capable of taking a beating.
Other than that make it so that you'll punish them for using the flanks, corridors of fire can be very effective. Have war machines/missile units on either side, a few rounds of shooting from these is quite powerful and not many are willing to enter into range of a organ gun just to get at a flank.
The table edge is quite effective, meaning they all come from one flank or from the front. Either way it can be countred quite easily. The characters I wouldn't suggest, alone they won't fair well. A character in a dwarf army will only do well if in a unit, alone they're too easy to take on and kill.
As for Kislevites, an option definatly. But I would never advocate this as I think its compensating for a designed flaw, thus the player can't handle the slow movement. It you can't and must use them every game then maybe dwarves aren't for you, but they can be fun and useful occassionally.
What i do is make a huge wall of dwarfs. Also use the bear trap tactic in the dwarf Book. It goes some thing like this:
Usually the temptation to leech victory points off the vulnerably missile units is too great for a newbie, and once they charge those they get hammered by the surrounding units.
If that doesnt work, set up in a diagonal 'wedge' shape with a wall of Dwarfs and the table edge protecting flanks. Heres another dodgy diagram:
represent the table edges. The ...........'s are just for aligning the D's, which represent dwarf units. When the enermy comes, he cannot get your flanks. Remeber well the bear trap when using this.
A Promise to a dead man means nothing.
About dwarfs being flanked I have a funny storry. I was playing a 2000 point battle against vampire counts and I had the opportunity to charge a unit of 30 grave guard with 20 warriors armed with great weapons and a unit of hammerers and my lord. However my warriors miraculously failed their fear test and held their ground ditching my most elite unit and lord in an outnumbering and fear causunf unit.
Not only that, my opponent had 3 necromancers and a total of 9 power dice, he was most definitely going to get at least one invocation of nehek off and flank my hammerers. I had to survive for 2 close combat phases and not lose in any or else my dwarfs stood a good chance of getting run down. I did good the first turn being as I stuck fist with a strength of six. and a lord in the front ranks, I won the first phase easily.
Second phase was dire as I rolled horribly for dispel and a unit of 8 skelies turned up on my fank and charged in on a bound Item casting some kind of dance macabre. It didn't look good. So there went my rank bonus. Then the wight lordoffered a challenge. Knowing that the necro lord could only be hurt with magic I figured with a little luck I could kill him with ym lord and maybe hold out against the wight lord with my Gate Keeper. This was ythe hightlight of the battle. The loyal bodyguard to my lord stepped forth to protect his king. The wight lord struck first, hitting all three attacks. Killing blow could have finished me but he failed to wound twice and the third atack was a 4. I got lucky. Now to attack back. Both attacks struck home and with a stength of six knew grimnir was on my side this day. The gate keeper's hammer crashed down twice and utterly crushed the wight lord back into his grave. My lord failed to wound the necromancer due to good rolling on his ward save and the skellies on the flankk did nothing and recieved 3 casualties in turn. Not enough to ommit their flank attack effeciency so i thought i was in trouble still.
Miraculously I won combat that round by 2 or 3. Those skellies in my flank actually caused me to hold out for that phase. once again it was my turn and my warriors charged the flank of the skellies this time passing their fear test. Both units sufferd a massive defeat in combat and were eventually defeated. On the otehr front A unit of warriors and thunderers held off his fell bats, Dogs of war cannons(which were destroyed by my stone thrower) spirit hosts and ghouls. byt he end of the battke i had accumulated more victory points thatn he had spent on his army and he had accumulated none. Total casualties for my was 10 dwarfs. I tool great pride in this massacre. My gatekeeper's new alias is "Wight Basher". it wa defiitly an act of sheer heroism, it just reminded me why I play the game and why i play dwarfs.
