It's the time of year again where I get to play fantasy, and my dwarfs march from their hold to fight the Vampire Counts yet again.
The question has recently come up as to which runes I may pick to strike during a game.
I have always been under the impression that I was free to strike any of the three runes during the game. He has been told that we may only pick one rune per game. Ie, I cannot cast Wrath & Ruin turn one, then Hearth & Hold turn 2. He's now championing this cause with the phrase in the rulebook stating '...no two Anvils function exactly the same way.' (pg. 30, Dwarf army book).
I feel pretty sure this is just a fluffy way of saying how each Anvil is unique and employs its power through different ancient runes that line it, but hey, I could be wrong. As someone has told him on forums that I'm not allowed to strike different runes, I'd appreciate the issue being cleared up here by the bearded experts!
that phrase is completely fluff related. You can use any rune in any order any game.
there is nothing as that! He is dark elfing you around. Don't fall for the things that your opponent says.
Thanks for the help, guys. My stubbby-legged fellows have a hard enough time as it is.
Truth be told, I'm getting pretty tired of playing them. I can't ever pull a win with them, although my only opponents have been VC and one game against Brettonians earlier today. It may be my stubborn refusal to play neither Thorek nor a gunline, but something's keeping them from winning games. I do things right generally I *think*... I get the charge on cavalry with the help of the Anvil, I run hammerers and MRoValaya against VC, I never miss with my cannon shots, etc.
But the poor guys can't even get a draw.
Too bad you are so stubborn about Thorek, although you are doing your opponent a favour As far as points go - it is either you are using Thorek or you are not using Anvil at all. (imho)
I usually base my army around a solid unit of Ironbreakers and from there see where it takes me... sometimes you add a sneaky Gyrocopter, sometimes you have too much fun with Bolt Throwers. But as long as you got large and solid blocks of troops... you should be okay. Good luck and don't give up on them... just try something different and see if it works out for you.
