I have been playing 40k for a long time now and am now branching out into fantasy as i am involved with a gaming club which plays this more often. To start with I am getting 2 sets of the battle for skull pass dwarfs a lord and a box of warriors to supplement this as a start. This will amount to overall 1 lord, 2 thanes, 2 dragonslayers, 40 warriors, 20 thunderers, 16 miners and 2 cannons.
So the question is am I missing anything which is very important? The next unit added will either be hammeres or iron breakers I haven't decided yet and after that I really don't know the people in the shop tell me the anvil adds an interesting effect but I am not really wanting something expensive that can blow up in my face mainly due to the fact that my dark eldar lords always seem to kill themselves with combat drugs.
Any ideas are welcomed as they really cant do to much harm.
You have come to the right place, and bought exactly the right models for the job. Those models will form a very stable army that you can form up into 2 warmachines, 2 big combat units and 2 missile units.
About the anvi; yes, it's adds something interesting but personally I dislike it. I dislike it for the reason dwarfs dislike magic like wizards use it. It is wild and uncontrollable. The anvil isn't uncontrollable though, but very risky. The chance to blow yourself up is rather big every turn, let alone if you add the chance of it happening together for the first 2 or 3 turns. Therefor I made up my mind to stay away from the anvil and go with a good old lord always. Dwarven spirit.
Did you get the lord on shieldbearers? Because that option is just a must have. It's not a "it's quite nice, you might like it" kind of things, it is awesome and I don't think there is any negative side effect to shieldbearers at all. They give you 2 extra ws5 str 4 attacks from the bearers, +2 to your armoursave and you are immune to being killed in a single hit ( whats the 40K equivalent of killing blow? ) for a price that is laughable.
1 warmachine that would be great to add would be the organ gun. It is prone to exploding, but if it gets off a good volley it is worth it and if it performs well once then it will have a psychological effect on your enemies for many games as he will be afraid to send something into it's killing zone.
With your models you can make the following list ( I will leave runic items for you to decide on )
20 longbeards ( you can build these with the 16 warriors from the regiment box, mixing an extra 4 skull pass warrior mini's into the unit )
shields ( worth the money, they are even good in combat with shields ( 4+ save in cc, pretty decent ) .You could use some spare shields from the warrior box and glue them on the backs )
rune of forging ( this rune will prevent your cannons from blowing up like the shoddy manling constructions. You may reroll misfires. Without this rune a cannon is just no good )
rune of forging
( organ gun )
1150 pts ( without the organ gun )
That is a good base to start with, removing some stuff to get it to 1000 or adding to get to 1500, which are both good levels to play fantasy at.
Miners are fun, but using a large unit is a waste usually, because due to their low movement they will struggle to reach the enemy in time when they appear from the edge of the board.
Dragon slayers ar also fun, but they are more a thing to use when you have some points and a character slot left, rather than a part of your strategy.
