He marched past the ranks of proud warriors, their armour gleaming in the sunlight, a truly impressive display of the might and steadfastness of the Dwarfs. Expression gruff, the Thane struggled to keep a smile of pride from his lips as he inspected the troops. And struggle he did, for all the dwarfs gathered before him were the pride of the hold.
All of them?
He almost stumbled as he came to a sudden stop in front of the so called pride of the mountain, their elite.
"What... what are you beardlings doing there?" he snapped out, looking them all over.
"We're your longbeards, ready to grumble at your service, sir!"
He sputtered, his hand trembling with rage as he stroked his beard, stroking himself. "Longbeards?"
"Yessir! Can't you tell by our white beards?"
Unable to contain himself, he grabbed their leader by the beard, holding it up to his eyes. "This? This bit of scruff? It barely reaches your knees! How could you possibly call yourself a longbeard? How can any of you call yourself longbeards?"
"Facemasks sir!" piped a voice from the rear ranks.
"We got face masks!" quipped another. "After we bleached our beards, we figured that the best way to prove how old we're supposed to be was to put on some face masks."
The thane could almost choke on his anger as they all nodded in unison at him, their beards taunting him as they dangled so high up from the ground.
As the great king Ulrik once grumbled long ago in a thread I'm currently peeking at, face masks really are a fairly poor way to hide a dwarf's ankles.
So, as a smoothed face fey slowly gathering up a beardy army, I have to question you gruff bearded types what do you do with your longbeards?
Do you buy those rather pricy metal models? Use hair extensions? Pick and choose heads (seeing how the basic plastics do come with at least one head with a suitable beard)? Or do you think that from a distance, white beards and face masks work decently enough?
I confess, I gave my longbeards the masks! Argh, the grumbling of a king like Kuffy never let's you go!
How I built my Longbeards:
I took the face masks as I didn't mind them and they added a bit of a grim feeling to the unit, you can't see the enemy's face when you are fighting my longbeards and it gives an atmosphere of supremacy over normal warriors.
The beards went white, obviously, and the beards in the regiment box are quite long, compared to the hammerers' beards for example. I don't require the beards to reach to their ankles.
But I didn't slap the masks on and call em longbeards. Their armour needed to look better, so I used far more gold than on my warriors, and I filed the symbols off their shields, to hand paint runes on them. I am particularly proud of the freehand on my champion's shield. I also converted their helmets. I added wings, horn, little hammers with wings or other ornaments, and I think it makes for a very special unit.
Here a selection of cool helmets:
I haven't actually thought about that.
I haven't got any longbeards but I think that I will probably give them the face masks and.
I definitely won't be buying the metal models just because you cannot convert them in the same way and because they are too expensive.
The metal Longbeards are my favourite models in the Dwarf range, full of character.
It is thanks to your thread that I've been muttering about this, Bearded One. You and Ulrik's grumbling. :b
Not that I mind if someone else goes with the facemasks and polished armour, but rather I'm trying to fish around for other options. The metal series are nifty, though a bit pricy, and even worse, a bit lacking in variety. (Though maybe that lack of variety would look interesting, with all the longbeards marching to battle in parade formation rather than waving their weapons unnecessarily?)
hehe. Glad to see my grumbling gets some attention from you beardlings.
As of yet I am unsure how I am going to make my own longbeards. I have a unit of the metal ones left and they're great, so full of character, but not really cheap. I haven't looked into the building of them just yet.
And if you just combine old metal beards with facemasks? I don´t own the metal ones but I think they would still look great next to their "younger" cousins.
