Hey all, as a player returning to warhammer after 4 or 5 years off, I was wondering which army I should start up. I've narrowed it down between High Elves and Dwarfs but I'm really stuck!
If I were to play High Elves, it would be a magic heavy list, using a few mages, pheonix guard, rbt's and spearmen as core, and shadow warriors for war machines etc.
As a Dwarf player, I would have a few war machines, no thunderers or quarrelers, and LOTS of heavy armored warriors, ironbreakers, and longbeards. I love the idea of a bunch of dwarfs marching toward the enemy, shrugging off every blow that comes their way.
So any advice or opinions are appreciated! Thanks!
Be elves, you'll never win with that dwarf setup : /
What you are referring too with your build is the "marching army", and most marching dwarf lists include the Rune of strollaz' that allows you to move a large portion of your army before the game starts, definately need it. However dwarfs are slow, so you will be needing something to force your enemy to come towards you too, instead of avoiding and firing volleys in order to kill 2 -3 dwarfs each turn ( yes, enemy shooting phases are often that pathetic against an armoured dwarf host ) .
I think a str7 bolt thrower ( a bolt thrower with engineer, and rune of penetrating, the chariot killer of warhammer ) and a cannon ( cannon + rune of forging, never worry about misfires again! ) or a grudge thrower ( grudge thrower with rune of accuracy and rune of penetrating. A str5 template and rerolling the scatterdice? Yes please. ) will serve the job. Spend the rest on longbeards, ironbreakers and some warriors and you should be good. Also consider the masterrune of grungni on the longbeard or ironbreaker banner. A 5+ wardsave against missiles and magic missiles for units within 6" will make it even harder for opponents to avoid battle but still win on kills made from range.
Dwarfs every time.
The Land, The Lady, The Light.
Thank you for your responses so far! After reading your inputs and looking at the dwarf army lists and such, I think I'm going to build a balanced dwarf force. I'll most likely start with the battalion and add on more war machines/infantry as I go. A few friends and I are getting back into Warhammer after a couple of years off so the games will be friendly most of the time. Thanks again for your input!
Dwarf units often amaze you on the field and very often, almost every other game, the will stand their ground against impossible odds and keep on fighting. Also, enemy shooting is a joke against your T4 heavily armoured army, you will shrugg off nearly everything they can fire at you. Even things like high elf repeater bolt throwers are laughablem as he first needs to hit and then roll 4's to wound. You still have a 6+ ( Ironbreakers 5+ ) save left to minimize the damage.
Playing dwarfs can be interesting and very rewarding. A good number of warmachines ( at least 3 I'd say, I've got 3 myself and I always have the right one near to beat a potential threat. ) combined with lots of fighting units can carry the day often.
In all honesty, it's the army I'm working towards as well, sort of. I'm not going to take a Lord. I'm taking an Anvil. Because it makes us SO much more manoeuvrable. It means we might actually (god forbid!) get a charge. And even if they try and manoeuvre backwards we can wrath and ruin them down in position. With Strollaz's and the Anvil we can move 18" before the enemy can even move. And from dwarves, that's terrifying! Hell, a first turn charge is possible!
Hell yeah! I plan on having a "formation" of 25xWarriors, 25xLongbeards, 25xHammerers, a Dragonslayer and a BSB. I can make them all immune to fear, and very hard to break!
Admittedly, I probably wouldn't take it in tourneys, in tourneys I think Dwarfs should play defensive. But this army looks like a lot of fun.
Just my thoughts. (:
Yeah hopefully the artillery battery behind the marching blocks will handle the major threats. Some monsters that aren't so killy (treemen, stegadons) can just be beaten down with SCR. Because, against monsters we almost always get +5CR standard. So all their attacks need to hit and wound.
Heh. Dwarves have a hard time in tourniments because we have trouble forcing confrontation.
We are the number one spoiler force. I grin every time a leading army sets up across me in a tourniment, because I know I'm going to ruin his day.
May the Emperor forgive you, for his servants cannot.
