Hi, I've always been captivated by the plight of the Dwarfs and thier very key role in the history and development of the Fantasy universe as a whole. Lately I have been trying to find as much fluff relating to the Dawi (and thier evil cousins) as I possibly can, but besides what i've found in the actual Dwarf codex, and the VERY compelling story about the siege of Kraka Drak in the WoC codex, there seems to be no really substantial text concerning Dwarfs in fantasy. any help here would be appreciated.
I was thinking why it's taking GW so long to update the Dwarfs, and I started to wonder a few things: Is there a general lack of Dwarf players (I personally have never played against a Dwarf opponent)? Does anyone know how long it's been since the last army book was released? has anyone heard any rumours of a new release? Does GW treat the Dwarfs similarly to the way they treat Dark Eldar in 40k and if so, why?
thanks in advance. Cheers to strong ale and many a long tale!
Dwarfs are indeed a pivotal race in the history of warhammer and are an extremely characterfull army. Even in stories written for other armybooks, where they are supposed to lose ( Siege of Kraka Drak ( WoC book ) attack on Karak Hirn ( Beastmen book ), battle for Karak Drazh ( previous Skaven armybook, good story. ) ) they are described as very strong and determined, and extremely organised ( shieldwalls, artillery placements etc. ) , fearless and that they make incredible things from fortresses to ale. At the end of such a story they will have lost ( you can't write an armybook for a race and have them lose to an enemy in one of the short stories ) but the feeling remains.. they are tough cookies to crack and defeating them will cost you a lot. They never appear weak.
I do hope they are soon in line for a new armybook, within a year or two hopefully, but we can't be sure. GW is a little erratic sometimes.
I think there are plenty of dwarf players, or at least people who still have a dwarf army in their collection. VC, DE and Daemons are now popular though and while dwarfs are still a very capable army, even without playing a gunline ( my 2000 pts list is a very nasty alround list and not overly gunline. 2 units of 20 combat troops, 1 of 14, 4 combat heroes ( one is a runesmith though ) , 2 missile units of 10 and 3 warmachine ) and scoring a massacre against dwarfs is hard, unless you destroy all of them ( then you have banners, general, BSB, tablequarters etc and then VP's go up verrrry fast. )
My point is dwarfs are fine at the moment, although I do look at other armybooks with envy about some of the cool options they are getting and I hope dwarfs will get a section of non-magical items too, like Empire, Skaven, vampires, daemons, warriors of chaos, beastmen and dark elves have. An engineers section with cool handguns etc. I think Dwarfs aren't as much in need for an update as Skaven and beastmen were, or Tomb kings and Ogres are. Bretonnia isn't in such a good shape anymore either.
I'm sure dwarfs will show up in the updating schedule some time soon, as they are a pivotal race in the warhammer background and one of the core armies of fantasy.
very well put, they really never do appear weak, they never quit. I think i'm drawn to Dwarfs because of thier indominable will, and cheeky character... never played them on the tabletop because I don't care much for the models (covers face with hands and gets into the fetile position) and I wouldn't be able to handle only moving 3 inches!!!
I actually have the old Skaven codex, I'll have to look for that story.
I have another question: what do all of you Dwarf players think of the relivance of the Chaos Dwarfs within the Fantasy universe? do you feel the CD are needed in order to understand the full history and potential of the Dwarf race, or could they just as easily be left by the wayside? (I personally think it's cool how the CD craft armour and weapons for the WoC, and the fact that they have millions of greenskin slaves is quite Dwarfish if you ask me).
If you can find a copy of 'Stone and Steel' from Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay you will find a lot of Dawi history in there.
I think we don´t need any new army/race in the game. It wouldn´t work well. It would be either too strongh or too weak or too similar to army/race X. We have so many different races and armies in the game that it would be too hard to find a good working and balanced new army concept.
AAAAAAND..... It would take even longer for every army to get a new army book for every edition.
Nah, I want more!!!!
Ironbreakers with gromril armour each with a rune of stone, hammerers with regular gromril.
Skirmishing slayers ( or more chargerange or something special besides the slayer skill, they can't get into the combats you want. )
Skirmishing ranger ( a scouting block, what were you thinking GW! )
