My friend plays Beastmen and I seem to have some trouble against his army. It could possibly be because of my lack of experience playing dwarfs, but every game we've played so far has resulted in a massacre for him (except one). He brings 4 units of 10 gors (3 ambushing) 2 units of 5 ungors (1 ambushing) a chariot, 3 minotaurs, 5 centigors, and a hero who dishes out about 5 or 6 attacks on average (he has some stupid sword that gives him attacks) I've tried a few different lists and none have worked. Any ideas or tactics that work well against these buggers? We only play at 1k points bcz that is all we can come up with. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What hero does he have, a wargor or a doombull? They both have T5, give the rune of might a try.
I am pretty sure he can't ambush 3 of 4 units. 1 unit deployed normally for one that is in ambush. A FAQ will sort that out when it comes.
When your quarrelers & thunderers have shields, you can turn them around when the ambushers come and propably win combat. Depending on your deployment, you might even get to stand & shoot. A dragonslayer running around over there is also nice.
I've seen your list, adviced a changed one, if you replace the cannon with a bolt thrower ( you can proxy your cannon as a bolt thrower, I'm sure your opponent doesn't mind? ) with engineer, and use the points left for a dragon slayer. He is unbreakable, so can hold up those ambushing units for a while.
Minotaurs are only T4, so focuss your missile units and bolt thrower on them. I'd be suprised if you don't manage to take down at least 1 before they charge. A good bolt thrower shot should take 1 down by himself.
We asked someone at Games Workshop if there was anything that changed it and he said no. I asked about the white dwarf and he said that it was never "official" so I DON'T KNOW! its a real pain in the arse.
A literal pain in the arse.
The beastmen FAQ isn't out yet, it's a major rules issue ( poor wording on GW's part created the problem ) and will be adressed in the FAQ. When it is, most likely it will be the 'deploy 1 for ambush 1' version of the rule. Your opponent will have to deal with that change in his tactic in a month or so when the FAQ is out. It's only units of 10 gors btw, so a dragonslayer can keep them busy for half a game. If you turn your missile units around when the gors show up you can outight them, maybe shoot at them or stand & shoot.
Tried an organ gun? A shot can decimate any of his units, because he has all those small units.
i have played a beastmen player of mine a number of games and the worst result was draw for me, but count that i am much more experienced but he still suprizes me.
Use multiple small units. a 10 man shield warriors will protect your flanks. rear etc. Don't put your war machines together so he can roll over it with a large group of Raiders.
Here is a list i used to play with him with some variations.
19 man LB FC bsb goes here.
15 man Hammerers FC
20 Man Warriors shields
10 man Warr. shields
10 man war shields
10 quarellers (beastmen does not have armour so Quarellers are cheeper and nearly as effective as thunderers)
1 or 2 bolt throwers
1-2 organ gun ( flame canon, dont use gyro on them they have some skirmishers beasts)
Runelord with anvil
a Bsb thane 1+ armor save 4+ ward save.
Master engineer with pistol to protect your warmachines. Or another choppy thane with a weapon contains double str against t5 and asf to kill or wound the characters.
As a friend of mine said. Beastmen relies on Heros more than thier troops, they can get enormous number of attacks (8 str5 armor piercing attacks are usuall)
Therefore equip your characters to survive their onslaught, 1+armor save 4+ ward save thane is a very good to soak up the damage the attacks of a hero or lord.
Put your 10 man units around warmachines even they are stationed behind your lines. Kill the big creatures (especially jabberslythe) with your guns.
i also agree with Mr Bearded One's thoughts.
And if you can don't make the field crowded with terrains.
