With the new deadliness of great weapons in 8th we can expect to see many more units of warriors decked out with overly large axes (I've just put another 20 together myself).
What are peoples opinions on shields to go with them? Waste of time? Or worth the extra points to help them weather missile fire before closing to hack apart their foes?
Might be list-dependent, no? If you've set up a combat-oriented list with a lot of units which will be charging into the enemy, the shields will likely have more utility than if you have a gun-line list with warriors to keep the enemy's forces off the gunners.
In my only test game in 8th edition i used a 25 man FC GW shield warrior unit.
They tested their merit against 20 man FC standart/ Warbanner, Assasined, dark elf warriors.
They did well. very well, the step up rule allowed me to do 10 attacks even assasin, was ASF and rerolled his hits because of high initiative, chopped my front line.
Maybe they may not hold against tougher setup but. They killed every single dark elf warrior before some help from opponent side finished them of.
Shields did not do anything maybe i will be skip that option next time.
GW seem to be mandatory on basic Dwarves, S3 doesn't cut it and losing the point of save was a big blow, rather have some offense back with step up.
I'd still take Shields for shooting/Magic but GWs all the way. Longbeards can stick with HW/Shield because of S4 but S3 is to easily run over and you're I2 anyways.
