I'm new to the Dwarf arena and I was looking for some input on my Dwarf army's fluff and basic army list.
Here is a bit of fluff on the Ironbite Clan:
After the great flooding and loss of Karak-Varn, Bofvar Ironbite, the Lord of the Ironbite Clan, led his people away from the fallen citadel. Known for his ferocity on the battlefield, despite his short stature (even for a dwarf), Bofvar swore that Karak-Varn and all the fallen strongholds would be reclaimed for the Dwarf people. Bofvar led his people west to the Grey Mountains, where others from fallen holds had gone before them. The Ironbite Clan settled near the Loren Forest, at the base of the Grey Mountains near the stronghold of Karak-Norn. Hoping to gather the strength of other smaller tribes, it was Bofvar’s oath to retake the holds of his people. Unfortunately, the other lords did not share Bofvar’s enthusiasm for battle, and chose to remain to watch over their people. After bearing a son old and strong enough to lead the tribe, Bofvar set off with the warriors of the Ironbite Clan to retake the holds one-by-one, beginning with Karak-Varn.
The Throng was never seen again.
Lord Bruenor Ironbite, a descendent of the Great Lord Bofvar Ironbite, has succeeded where his predecessors failed. The constant raids of Orcs and Goblins have only grown worse since the settling of the Loren Forest, and many of the smallest clans have been wiped out. Uniting the orphans of countless lost clans under the Ironbite name, Bruenor has built a more powerful Throng than any of his forefathers. He holds his ancestor’s grudge to this day, and grudges are not easily forgotten.
The Ironbite Clan itself is similar to its most famous leader. Like Bofvar, the clan is small in size, but ferocious in battle. Years of defending their homes form constant raids and the passing of knowledge from the clan’s forefathers have honed the Ironbite warriors into an unstoppable force. Led by their new lord, Bruenor (who many believe with surpass even the Great Bofvar), the Ironbite Clan sets off to retake the holds of the World’s Edge Mountains.
Army List: (Tentative)
Lord Bruenor Ironbite the Unifier (Dwarf Lord):
Like his ancestor, Lord Bofvar, Lord Bruenor is shorter than most dwarfs, but what he lacks in size he replaces with merciless execution on the battlefield. A renowned tactician, Bruenor has united many tribes from the Loren Forest, and hopes to fulfill his Clan’s oath: to retake the once great holds of Dwarfs long ago.
Rune of Spite
Master Rune of Gromril
Master Rune of Kragg the Grim
(35 points of Rune possibility)
Total: 266 points (__%)
Thane Fret Suresight “The One-Eye’d Grudge Sniper” (Dwarf Thane):
Fret joined the Ironbite Clan after a raiding party murdered his family. Despite having lost his eye to an Orc’s sick pleasure, Fret remains one of the best shots in the Ironbite Clan.
Rune of Shielding
(50 points of Rune possibility)
Total: 97 points (__%)
Thane Drun Ironbite the Fearless (Dwarf Thane):
Drun is considered one of the strongest warriors in the Ironbite Clan, and is known for his lack of fear (maybe to a fault). Leaving no heirs behind, Drun is confident that nothing on this expedition will be enough to slay him.
Rune of Stromni Redbeard
Total: 210 points (__%)
Veteran Varn’s Warriors “The Block” (Dwarf Warriors):
As a veteran of many Orc raids, Varn opts to take the least experienced warriors into his unit. His stern will and demanding personality inspire courageousness within the youngest clansmen, and few will run underneath his watchful eye.
Total: 205 points (__%)
Grim’s Longbeards “The Stern Guard” (Longbeards):
Known best for killing fleeing warriors, Grim’s laugh is something heard of only in myths. The oldest member of the Ironbite Clan beside Bruenor, Grim is one of Bruenor’s most trusted advisors.
Total: 195 points (__%)
Thane Suresight’s Quarrelers “One and Done” (Quarrelers):
Thane Suresight personally trained each of the Ironbite Quarrelers, making them second to none. He travels with the unit of veterans, allowing his second-in-command to lead the newer shooters.
Total: 179 points (__%)
Trof’s Quarrelers “Second to One” (Quarrelers):
Thane Suresight’s second-in-command, Trof, leads the younger dwarf quarrelers into battle under their famous battle cry: “Too bad we can’t use handguns!”
Total: 193 points (__%)
Lord Bruenor’s Bodyguard “My life for Auir…I mean, uh, Bruenor!” (Hammerers):
These hammerers are Bruenor’s most trusted warriors and his personal bodyguard. He does not travel the battlefield without these men, and they are close to him at all times.
Rune of Slowness
Total: 308 points (__%)
TOTAL (so far): 1653 points
I'm mainly looking for some feedback/criticism on what I already have and some suggestions about what units (specials) and artillery to use for my army. I'm looking to be somewhere between 2000 and 3000 points, if that helps. I'd prefer (for fluff reasons) to avoid most gunpowder using weapons (hence quarrelers over thunderers), but I think that if the artillery uses it, it would be okay.
Thanks so much for the help!
Try to get more warriors with gw (25 fC), giving some fluff of course,
For War machines, you a have very grudgy thema for your army, so grudge thrower would be best for you, and you don't like Gunpowder so use Bolt throwers for large target hunting.
play some test games if you like and see what what is missing for you and change your army accordingly.
The first thing to do would be to add some more longbeards, 5 at least, and a standard bearer. Longbeards are a strong defensive unit and not bad fighters either, you will want a big unit. Then you've got 3 large combat units.
A warmachine or two will always help. A cannon with rune of forging and a grudge thrower with rune of penetrating & rune of accuracy for 255 points for example will help you deal with all kinds of threats. The cannon will bring down big scary enemies with str 10 D6 wounds, and it can reroll misfires so won't explode quikly. The grudge thrower is str 4 ( 10 at the center of the template ) and can reroll the scatterdice for some additional accuracy.
The lord, a master rune of gromril? O no, be aware of this trap! The lord has gromril armour ( 4+ save ) and shieldbearers ( +2 to the save ) which means a 2+ save. Add a rune of stone instead of the rune of gromril, and you've got yourself a 1+ save. And this saves you 20 points! You might want a rune on your great weapon and I would suggest either the rune of snorri spangelhelm ( +1 to hit, always good ) , rune of striking ( Ws8 lord will even hit other lords on 3's ) or rune of might ( enemies with T5, like enemy monsters and lords, are toast when you hit him with str 10 !) . All 3 runes are good options.
Another way to do it would be to take only a great weapon, and use your points on runic armour. Master rune of spite, rune of stone and a rune or resistance means a 1+ rerollable armoursave and 4+ wardsave. 251 pts. Hard to kill and this is the build I would advice so you can save points.
Your thane is a bit weak'ish. He only has str 4, and if you deploy him in a unit he can't be picked out by ranged attacks anyway. The rune of shielding is a bit overkill. Try this:
crossbow, rune of stone, GW
very cheap, and does his job.
I often see people going for the biggest shiniest banner rune they can find. Stromni's rune is impressive, although actually it's not that impressive an effect. A BSB is usually a primary target for enemies to kill so he should be very sturdy. You build has only a 4+ save. This is a good one:
Master rune of gromril
Rune of resistance
Optionally a rune of cleaving.
160 pts ( with the rune of cleaving )
Also take the master rune of grungni on the unit standard of the hammerers. A 5+ wardsave transmitted onto other units, it is a perfect protection against ranged attacks and you don't need to fear any enemy fire anymore, even cannonballs! It is an absolutely fabulous rune!
So a quik count for those suggested changes would bring your list to:
- 15 ( if you take lord with the 1+ rerollable and 4+ wardsave )
- 18 ( crossbow thane ) - 50 ( BSB )
+ 50 ( Master rune of Grungni )
+ 255 ( cannon with rune of forging and grudge thrower with rune of accuracy and rune of penetrating )
+ 60 ( 5 longbeards )
