Wow... your entire battle line is destroyed before you get a first turn!!! Nice....
Oh, but dwarfs are resistant to magic... yah, right. Dispel dice don't work against a high elf army that can run two characters where all doubles count as irresistible force. You don't even get a chance to try and dispel them. One of them shrugs off a miscast a turn, so they don't even have to fear throwing 6 dice at it which pretty much guarantees doubles...
If we do survive with a few stumpy fellows to get into combat, there is little left to step up into their elite infantry that ASF with great weapons and re-roll all their misses.
Sorry if I sound a little bitter, but it is because I am.
Tough to go against. Just make sure you spread out your forces as much as possible. Stagger your line so it doesn't hit so many units. You will have to forgo the bunker mentality that dwarves usually use.
I am right 94% of the time, why worry about the other 3%.
Yes, purple sun sucks. We have great T, saves, good acces to wardsaves and magic resistance, and this spell bypasses all of that and goes for our worst stat... What bothers me the most about it is that is allows no saves of any kind, not even magic resistance, even though it is a spell.. Magic resistance is pretty useless nowadays as it only helps against the like of magic missiles.
Do mind however that it is a magic vortex, so starts in base contact with his mage and moves and artillery dice x3. How much did he roll on his artillery dice?
Moving forward is not much of an option as it makes it easier for the purple sun to hit you and statistically eradicate 2/3 of any dwarf unit it passes over. The new rules made HE even lamer since even their great weapon troops can reroll to hit. So swordmasters hit on 3's with a reroll, wound on 3's and you either have no save or a 6+ and parry.
I wouldn't get cheery either. They can't shrugg off a miscast every turn, right? And does he use Teclis? Sneaky treacherous elf. If he hides his mages in a unit of archers in the back for example, it might be fun to try using one or two units of miners for once. And pound his squishy blocks with grudge throwers. They should die about as quikly underneath that template as purple sun kills us.
OMG... yes he uses Teclis. That dude shrugs off a miscast per turn. He also picks his spells when he shows up, and knows all of them, so Purple Sun is raging around no problem. He also uses the book that makes that mage have irresistible force on all his doubles too. At least double 6s still hurt him.
One thing that is very interesting to me... I did not know it started at the mage. The way he played it was that it can be placed on the unit and then do the 3x in any direction from any point on the field. If it originates from the mage it is not nearly as bad as I thought. (Please let it have to originate on the mage). I thought that it was only if it was a misfire that it originated on the mage. (Please tell me that it is true, it has to originate on the mage.)
One more beef... how come the high elves have a banner that makes a unit IMMUNE to all magic!!!! That is a dwarf item if I ever heard of one. At the very least dwarfs should have access to the same. They are the anti magic race for Gawds sake!!! We don't even get to use our magic phase....
I am gonna go have another ale before I end up getting sucked into the purple sun....
The sun is placed against the caster's base and from there it moves in the chosen direction, if its miscast its placed on top of the caster instead.
It seems so powerful to me that i cant imagine powerplayers to go to tournaments without it.
Texlis is just another reason not to play specials :p
Swordmasters on the other hand are more expensive than the best of dwarfs. except ranger longbeards with throwing axers...
imagine hitting it with a bolt thrower or grudge thrower.. youl have your investment back with a single hit! even crosbowmen are ace against it.

The solution is to keep the Mage away from you (sitting on your board edge and or Rune of Wrath and Ruin), or if he is already close to you crump him as soon as possible. It is impossible to stop yourself taking incredibly heavy losses in this edition, you have to imbrace it (this is much better for Dwarfs than for the pansy Elves!... Except for initiative based attacks or course...)
There's a difference between heavy casualties on the way forward, and losing 2/3 of a 300 point unit after a single spell though. 10 models I count as very heavy casualties for a dwarf unit before combat. Above that it's freaky ridiculous, especially for such expensive models that are supposedly very tough
i agree i got hit by the sun and lost 16 out of 28 longbeards against an empire player, ****ing retarted. hey does anyone know if dwarfs have accsess to the common magic items in the main rulebook hopefully they do so i can take wizards hat on my lord and give him the level 0 for death... LD 10 mind war!!!!
a dwarf wth a wizards hat? whadaya nuts? :p
In the army entries, characters have options for runes, but not for magic items.
any good ways to eliminate purple sun wizards in say.. turn 1? =D
