The battalion is always a good place to start, as it gives you a cannon, some missile troops and some warriors. You'll also need to get a thane or a runesmith or something to act as a general. After that, have a look at the army book and draft up a list. Show it to us, and we'll give you some pointers on it
ChadMS is totally right. The batallion box gives you great value for money and it is the perfect place to start a dwarf army. It as 48 dwarfs ( thunderers/quarrelers are assembled about the same way as warriors, and the parts are easily interchangeable. ) with which you can for example build... 20 warriors, 10 quarrelers/thunderers and 20 longbeards/warriors. You will be short 2 models, so might need to build a unit filler for that.
thanks so the battalion, but what should i assembly them like eg command, no command
then what else would be good to bring it up to a 1000 points il need some type of hero
am completely clueless am only just starting to get in to fantasy and this is my second army
Give your units of warriors/longbeards full commands, but I wouldn't give any to your missile units. When giving units upgrades like that, you have to think about if the upgrade will make the unit better at what it is meant to be doing. Ideally, missile units should not get into combat, so full commands are not necessary.
For further units and heroes, you will need a thane as they make the best generals. A runesmith would be good as well, as they are excellent for magical defense.
Another war machine would be good. Make sure that you have at least 1 cannon in your army, so you may want an organ gun to go with it.
Also make sure that you have at least 1 elite unit. By this I mean a unit of Longbeards, Ironbreakers or Hammerers. They are all superb at what they do, and hopefully The beared one will be writing an article on them soon.
Hope this helps

I think I will start to write something tonight. Be prepared for a late night as it might only be up around 02: 00
I would always base your army around a unit of 20 warriors, 20 longbeards and a cannon/organ gun. This is a sturdy center for an army, after which you can add missile units, characters and other combat units. Unless you take a dwarf lord it really doesn't matter who you designate as the general, wether it's a thane of untimely DOOM, or a gun toting master engineer. It's all ld 9, so it. does. not. matter! For all you care you call a warrior champion the general. ld 9 all round rocks.
True, I just suggested a thane because he is the most effective combat character at that points level, and I always like my generals to be cracking skulls on the front line
