Dwarfs are a Strong, tough, intelligent, noble race; who use what they have learned in their many years to becoming a VERY POWERFUL race. They advance their Technolgoy to become the Best at creating siege engines that rain death and destruction down on their enimies better then any other, Oh wait never mind the empire are better at it... sorry my bad.... Well they have advanced there alloy working and have created some of the strongest army to protect there Heavy infantry making their Heavy infantry the best and able to crack any enemy line and withstand the most ferrous attacks, Oh wait never mind that is Mortals of Chaos with chaos warriors. Well the Noble Dwarfs have some of the Best hand held guns that rain thunder and death down on the enemy, oh wait never mind that is the skaven, Well I will not even try to say they are a fast and mobile army cause everyone knows dwarfs stand ferm and don't advance very fast..... Well they don't have cheap throw away soldiers, they don't have great elite soldiers, they don't have cav, they don't have Wizards even, well they are not completely without merit I guess they do have the best magic items in the game called Ruins. So that is something they have going for them they have magic items... and army who has to rely on having better magic equipment then the enemy's characters? well they win sometimes I guess so they can't be that bad. I am a Dwarf fan, but just I hate how they are so hard to play cause everyone seems to be better.
Squats may be a bad word to most 40k players but maybe demiurg might not be to different when they finally arrive.
The problem is, that our books still dates from the 6th edition. So the rules are a bit on the old side, luckly not so bad as wood elves.
Dwarfs are not very hard to play.. You take some guns, you take some warmachines and some infantry to protect it. The perfect dwarf army... Pretty boring to play with sometimes.
Let me note some strong points:
Dwarfs have the best warmachines, why? They can put runes on it.. Grudgethrower hits at strenght 5 with re-rolls on the scatter and artillery dice? I can call that a pretty awesome warmachine. Cannons, same story. Organ gun is awesome!
They can give almost all of their core choices great weapons.. and still are not that expensive.
They have a standard leadership of 9.. Dwarfs simply don't break when u have a good general and a battlestandard, or your rolls are very bad.
Dwarfs are the best in the part of 'Stand your ground'. Tough, well armoured, warriors who can do serious damage back at you.
Ofcourse we are a bit behind with the rules, but u can't say they don't do well this edition, because they just rock when u play right with them!
ya dwarfs have been helped a long way in 8th. the nerfing of most cav units, and the fact that charge range has increased are but a few.
I think with Dwarfs its not a matter of whether they are really good at any specific secrion, such as speed or shooting or whatever, its more that they are pretty strong across all of it.
Good consistant shooting with good guns (Armour piercing and +1 to hit are nice).
Solid warmachines that can be upgraded with runes and engineers.
A hearty resistance to magic that no-one else can match, which means a good thing since a lot of other armies use a lot of magic.
Troops that support the common play style, as in heavily armoured defenders to blockade the shooting.
Sure, they have their downsides, as every army does, but the even wellroundedness of the whole army makes them a good, if a little boring, choice, especially if you are new to the game.
May the Dragon of Unhappiness never fly up your bottom.
