Evening fellow ale drinkers,
I recently competed in a 1500pt tournament at my local GW and had reasonable success with my list. It includes 20 thunderers (2 units), 2 organ guns, a cannon, a runesmith, a horde of longbeards and most importantly a dwarf lord. What I wanted to discuss was that inspired by various builds here (most notably The_Bearded_One) I built my lord around being as physically resistant as possible with runic armour, while trusting in good dwarf steel, taking just a great weapon.
The actual build is Dwarf Lord w/ GW, MRoGRomril, RoResistance, RoPreservation and MRoSpite. Sitting at 261 points he isn't exactly cheap but he has a 1+ rerollable AS, 4+ ward and is immune to all KB and poison. Initially I was hesitant at taking such a heavily kitted out lord in only 1500pts but seeing the absolute carnage he can wreak, particularly in challenges, makes him one of the centrepoints of my army. In regards to tactics, he sits with the Longbeard horde and gets stuck into whatever unit he can find, hopefully something containing characters for challenges. So far he has never died (in fact never suffered more than a wound) and has killed 8 enemies in challenges (4x chaos unit champs, 2x festus, and exalted BSB with axe of khorne and an ogre tyrant) with a couple more that were left unresolved due to units breaking from combat.
Generally I find this type of lord build superior to ones with runic weapons as my lord is more than happy to sit back and take the hits while hacking back at the enemy with 4 WS7 S6 attacks a turn. If I had the model and a larger points allowance I'd take him on shieldbearers and drop the MRoGromril and possibly RoResistance in favour of a RoSteel because it makes him less reliant on the armour save that certain weapons wouldn't allow.
Anyway, let me know what you guys think, and give some input on how you build your lords, personally I'm always stuck as to what runes to take on a runic weapon.
nice kill count
For the builds i guess yours is one of the best since you dont have the model for Lord on Shield bearers.
Again i have stated before, Dwarf lord does not need to be a Killing machine with 8th eddition out troops can kill enough people on their own.
I use Lord more unmovable object as you do to stop hard hitting heroes lords and champions.
Yeah as I said, he rolls with the Longbeards and they are more than happy to chop up a unit while he butchers a champion or weathers the storm of their killy characters. His kill tally is also up to 12 now. The only thing is I think I need to make the list more combat dedicated. I came up against night goblins today and they had a 100 strong horde and with their poisoned attacks with hatred there was just not that much i could do. Especially considering they still had a considerable amount of other troops. What's the best way to deal with horde armies like that?
that is where grudge throwers came in my friend
