hello i have played dwarfs on and off for a few years but still consider myself a novice. basically a league is coming up and i was wondering what would be good to take in a all comers list. i have these models in my army so far.
75 dwarf warriors/longbeards with sheilds
3 organ guns
2 grudge throwers
1 dragon/demon slayer
1 thane/lord with great weapon
1 runelord with anvil of doom / thorek
1 batttle standard bearer
the league is going to be an escalation that starts at 750 points. however for some games before the league i plan on playing bigger, about 2000-3000 what would be a good mix of units to bring to such a battle im thinking bringing the horde of 60 miners with anvil and warriors/longbeards backed by cannons.
Basic dwarf tactics you want some good block units of warriors, 20 strong for smaller games and 30+ when you reach over 1500.
For best results you want them armed with great weapons, and as a rule you want to cram in as many great weapons as you can get. For now the dwarg anvil, although still very good, doesnt have half the staying power as it used to, so consensus as it stands is to go GW heavy. This means GWs on warriros, Quarrellers, longbeards, and hammerers. Its still worth taking along the one unit with shields these days as you will always need to hold up a unit, but GWs on units is where you will earn your points back unit wise.
I dont bother alot with miner hordes, mine have always had a habbit of comming up too late and its a lot of points to be waiting on turning up. Personaly i take the odd unit of 10-15, (used to take 2 units of 10) just to act as a problem for enemy war machines and ranged units. they are more manouverable and less costly.
Get yourself some quarrerllers with great weapons. The GWs mean if they do get charged you get to stand and shoot and then hit back at WS4 S5, thus more likely to cuase damage. Thunderers are good with the +1 to hit and armour piercing, but you cant take GWs and the range is a bit shorter.
War machine wise take a cannon and make sure it has Rune of Burning for flaming attacks, and i would build up to having also a grudge thrower and an organ gun on each flank. I would consider trying to sqeeze an organ gun into small point games as they are devestating at small points. You always need cannons though to bring down big monsters fast before they get into our troops.
Hopw this helps a little.
I've always added RoForging onto my cannons, makes them very hard to blow up. Not sure any more, it has always made them very expensive. But otherwise, it is wise to follow the advice given here.
Just to reply to what Kuffy said, it depends on how you run them. I use my dwarfs in horde formation a lot to get the most out of those GWs but anything above 1250 or so you need at least 35 so you're not losing attacks too rapidly. I usually run my horde at 40. If you are only going 5 wide then yes 25 is plenty, 30 for that extra bit of insurance or if you want the option of running them 6 wide. Thats my experience of it anyway
cool i just bought some great weapon warriors yesterday, thinking of making them longbeards and having 2 units of dwarf warriors to act as anvils for my miners and the great weapon warriors. the miners ill keep at 40 strong (horde) 60 i have found is just a waste because they wreck nearly anything they hit anyway. i always put rof on my cannons to because without them they misfire to much. i am going to play a 3000 point match soon against a lizardman player with lots of skinks and im wondering whats the best way to deal with those pesky bastards i was thinking organ gun or gyrocopter. maybe thorek ironbrow for rune of wrath and ruin ancient power?
Organ gun could do well against skinks, as it doesn't use BS.
Other than that, get into cc ASAP, since then the blow pipes are useless. Poison multishots are painful to Dwarves because it ignores armour and toughness, two of things that make Dwarves good.
May the Dragon of Unhappiness never fly up your bottom.
Raganok is dead on about the skinks, organ guns are brutal to them with auto hits that wound on 2s but they won't do enough on their own especially with cold blooded. Close combat will see them very dead especially if you have those GWs. A gyro won't be all that effective, especially if their skirmishers as the template won't do a great deal. Another option is to run 1 or 2 naked 50 point dragon slayers. If you use terrain well you should be able to get them into combat with the skinks holding them up for a turn at least while the rest of your shooting focuses on the more expensive/threatening parts of his army. Bear in mind that that is a very risky and situational tactic though, as slayers do have no armour whatsoever.
A horde of miners would be hilarious and totally surprising. If you do - you could consider the Anvil for the movement/first turn charge and like you said against skink with wrath. If you hit 3000 - I'd say all 3 organ guns *shutters*.
Yea - every dwarf these days brings GW warriors and hamemrers, and a mix of warmachines including organ gun, grudges, and cannons and some quarreler/thunderer units.
I like the plan with the naked slayer since it just came up in the thread above about dealing with hexwraiths (giving him a little rune weapon for ethereal). 2 uses so far for a naked, mostly, slayer - any other ideas?
1500+ take a BSB, period.
I'd love to see an organ gun at 750...
Stonebeard if I'm not looking to make friends I sometimes run an organ gun at 500. It doesn't help when i throw thunderers and a cannon in either. More seriously thought definitely about the BSB. Even with our high leadership eventually the dice aren't going to come up the way you want them and when the game can turn on one or two combats that re roll is priceless.
well guys i had the battle with the lizardman player it went down pretty well except those skinks ruined my cannons i brought 2 cannons, grudge thrower, and 2 organ guns and they all died because my blocks could not respond to all of his skinks, the organ guns did some damage to him but were mostly concentrated on whittleing down his block till they died turn 3 or so. game went well tho it was fun and close the war machines were the only things he killed fully. i killed a unit of warriors with my miners coming in, and some skink units(1-2 but a few of them had one model left no points for me) we had to call it turn 4 and add up points but it was my turn next and the battle seemed to be going in my favor he won by 100 or so points. just thought id tell u guys also that i took thorek ironbrow for the increased ancient rune chance on rune of wrath and ruin and failed to cast it first turen even with me reroll lol.
