No it's not porn...
I was wondering if these dragon slayer guys would be viable for the following rolls:
War Machine protection
Looking like a bad ass, standing alone, in the middle of a battle, hurling vulgarities at the opponent (if none of the above apply).
Of course, you'd have to keep him close to your own units to benefit from look out (unless he needs to go out to do his job), but I think it's possible for him to find a place on the battlefield. At 50 points it isn't too risky either... I just wish he were a little faster (and should be without the armor!).
On second thought, there are other options that are cheap and more likely to stay alive to do what you want like a 5 man squad of hammerers, miners, or slayers (deployed normally or not if you fancy) at just 60/55/55 points. I'd like to see a fast cav unit get past any of them! Keep them in reserve if you must to counter whatever he throws at your precious war machines.
I find the best role for slayer characters...are to guard the inside of my carry case .
IMO they are points better spent elswhere. Speedbumping with slayer characters, of sacrificing them, isnt effective. Its not an eagle etc specificaly designed for a job, its a throw back to when unbreakable T4 with multiple high strength attacks was a solid option, and slayer characters where there to speed up the process against particularly tough monsters or troops.
These days ther is just too much S4, faster striking, more attacks wielding, better deffensive, cheaper pointed troops kicking about than slayers. And this means on a hole Slayers need looking at to make them work, and in doing so Slayer characters will have a TRUE ROLE once again, within slayer units.
Not having the new Dwarf book I dont know the rules, but I like the idea of a Slayer wandering around ie Gotrex, is he still in the rules?
But can they only join slayer units or could you place him in a unit, then run him off when he is close enough to kill things
The few times I actually have run a naked slayer has been less than impressive if not hilarious. In a serious/tournament game I'd never take one because as saltrock said there are so many other important things to spend points on and although they may have a niche role its far too specific to include in a balanced list. When I have had more success is going them a little more expensive with the MRoSwiftness and just sprinting them at the biggest scariest thing I can find. At least that way he gets some hits in and even when he doesn't kill anything my cannon is more than happy to do the dirty work.
I'd actually side with the argument that these guys are useful. Dwarfs don't have access to any redirectors otherwise, and I think that's an important thing to have in Warhammer. They also clock in at the same price as a Great Eagle (which is to say, not much), and while they have nothing resembling that level of mobility, they also present a smaller frontage, are Unbreakable, and frankly much more formidable in combat than some fairy Elf bird.

Am I right in thinking there is a rune that gives you a 4+ ward save that isnt Armour, if thats so could a Dragon/Deamon slayer take it, might keep him alive long enough to kill something
I wouldn't bother - that's a Master Rune, and your Dwarf Lord will make better use of it.
He would yes, but I was throwing an alternative out there if someone wanted to run a solo slayer and try to have some success
Slayers can only take weapon runes unfortunately. Still, doubling his cost for a 4+ ward? I would rather take 2 instead.
I'd like to point out that they aren't meant to do any damage. If they aren't shot at, they are a speed bump, which when angled correctly can screw up your opponents plan. They either overrun out of position or reform and waste a turn.
If they shoot him down - great! Hopefully they had to use a bolt thrower or whole missile unit to do it. I'm not saying that's worth it, but at least he forces a choice. The more choices they have to make, the more likely it is they make a poor one.
I'll try it out on my next friendly game.
Ah, forgot that they only get Weapon runes. All the more reason to run 'em naked.
