I am considering playing my dwarves as an engineering themed army in the next tournament, specifically, black-powder/gunpowder themed. I have 33 thunderers (one FC) 3 cannons, and one of each of the rare units available. Other than that I have a fairly large and well rounded collection of dwarves (all units can be fielded at 20 models or greater, except hammerers, miners, and slayers), as well as a stone thrower and 2 bolt throwers. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions to fielding an army with this theme?
I had intended on giving at least one (larger 12+) unit shields and FC, expecting them to see combat, and possibly giving all thunderers shields for the same reason and using them as flanking units, deploying them on a hill between units of warriors/melee units.
Thunderers should nver go out without sheilds, a 4+ save in combat makes a big diference.
A guild expedition I would presume, there is a list in the back of the book, ask the tournament if you could use it, because it isn't currently tournament legal.
Keept your units simply 10 man strong and try to have gyrocopters flying around to march block to maximise the shooting.
have a big block of warriors or iron breakers as an anvil and slap the thunderers on the flank if you have to.
Well I may be a little harsh, but I don't think a Engineering army would use stone throwers, or bolt throwers, or are the dwarfs using a primitive type of technoligy here. I know you may not have any Organ guns, but those would fit your Black powder/gunpowder themed army. Kudos to you on the tournament.Originally Posted by Bosco

Thx for the input. I hadn't intended to use the BTs and ST in the army, just listed them as they are part of my collection, but i agree that they are out of place in a blackpoweder/gunpoweder themed engineering army. I have one of each of the three rare choices, and had intended to field the organ gun and the gyrocopter as they both seemed to fit just a bit better than the flame cannon (and the army might play rather static as it is anyways). I was hoping for a bit more input as how the thunderers are best used. I have read several threads where players advocate giving them shields, whch I intended to do, but moreso I was hoping for advice as to how they can be used other than standing on a hill, firing in two ranks (though this is probably their most effective role).
Does anyone know if the alternate lists in the back area of the army book are ever accepted for tournament play or is it purely on a case by case scenario? If possible I would prefer to field them as an engineering guild expedition, but have my doubts that most judges allow the alternate lists to be used in tournaments.
don't be fooled, the flame cannon is much superior to the organ gun anyday. It as a max range of 30 inches! and it gets more hits with the flamer template, also 24 if I remember, as the organ can get 10 max.Originally Posted by Bosco
