i have been pondering this for a very long time with my warriors, every battle i play, i have both, and every battle i think that the great weapons squad will do better, but it never does.
both have distinct advantages, (i play mainly versus vc, and he, so they don't take much from armour saves)
Hand Weapon and Shield
-3 and up armour save with heavy armour
-will most likely help you win combat resolution
-not limited to striking last
-a point cheaper than great weapons
-wounding vertually anything on 3's
-can dish out punishment while still having a 5 and up armour save
-seeing that dwarfs have i2, they will be most likely striking last anyway
Hand weapon and shield
-it does badly versus elite warriors
-it is only a strength of 3
-it will most likely strike last anyway
-bad combat res
-lower armour saves
pls. reply and tell me what u think, also when they update the dwarf rules, they should make crossbowmen be integrated into the warriors (i.e. +5 pts. for a crossbow) wouldn't it be cool to have a heavy armour, great weapon squad with crossbows!
Mr. Burns: Why is everyone being so insolent today?
Smithers: Well sir, it is christmas...
Mr. Burns: I'll decide when its christmas!
It's important to remember that you're not paying for a trooper with a great weapon all the time - you're paying for a trooper with the OPTION of using a great weapon. You need to pick your battles and, in places where you can afford it, use the great weapon. Otherwise, use the hand weapon for the better armor save. Also, remember to use the units in concert. Don't charge great weapons at an enemy unit. Let your hand weapons get charged, get some nice armor saves, and then the next turn charge your great weapons into the fray in the flank and do some damage.

The way I see it is that troops with different weapons should fill different roles. Troops with hand weapons and shield have a greater armour save against other average troopers, and therefore are better used as units of attrition, that is, units to hold your front lines.
Units with great wepons counteract thier 'strikes last' deficiency when used in a hard hitting flanking capacity to support units of attrition, as they will strike first on a successful charge.
Therefore, deploying them in the wings of HW & shield troopers is the best option, rather than relying on a weaker armour save.
An also remember that you can equip them with both GW and HW and shield, although it defeats the purpose of cheap core warriors to do so. So equip them with one weapon as a rule of thumb and deploy and use them wisely.
The iron crowned is getting closer,
Swings his hammer down on him,
Like a thunderstorm he's crushing,
Down the Noldor's proudest king.
Under my foot, so hopeless it seems.
You've troubled my day, now feel the pain.

I like to equip units with both (if points allow), why? They're versatile. I can choose whether they'd be better off with the better S or the better SV, makes them a very nice unit to have.
Most the time I will always take;
1 unit with HW, HA, S + FC
1 unit with GW, HW, HA, S + FC
and maybe if I cna get another HW unit in there, or the odd GW unit (10 in size) for flanking. It's really all a matter of prefrence.
