well i guessed that i would beat KU to the punch and start this little topic.
the three main dwarven warmachines- the cannon bolt thrower and stone thrower- are quite often the main stay of a dwarf generals special choices providing fire power quite cheeply and giving a new idea to tactics. having these often leads dwarf players to play defenceivly which imo is quite right to the dwarfen nature.
cannons: the strongest of the three as far as strenth goes the cannon fires an iorn ball at high speed at targets to deliver a crushing S10 blow. being able to punch through armour like butter this weapon is leathal vs those high T/Sv units which often form the center of a battle line. the cannon also makes a good sniping weapon for those solo mages that often hide between units and quite often creates a smudge in the land scape of them.
Bolt thrower: the only one of these three machines needing a to hit roll the bolt thrower is the weapon for a dwarf on a budget being less than half the cost of a cannon and 40 points less than a stone thrower. being the only one you can have more than one of per choice this often leads to two of them being played if they are included in a list. with the addition of a rune of penitrating the BT becomes a powerfull chariot hunter and gives those T6 critters something to think about. with the gradual loss of power as it creates shish kababs of its target unit it cant match the cannon for killing high toughness units but can allow a nice cheep option.
stone thrower: i havent had much experiance with the ST (none really) but i can see the tactical strenth of it. the template would have a much greaer effect on a lighter unit than a cannon or BT would with the template and has more reach than either of its counterparts (with out scatter/bounce/overshot) with a 60" range. with the rune of acuracy standing by to counter bad scatters and being able to splatter a command its a leathal weapon in the right hands. with D6 wounds caused rather than D3 the stone thrower poses a much greater threat to multi wound units and charicters than the cannon or bolt thrower would cause but lacks the accuacy of its partners for sniping.
please comment on your experiances with these machines

[16:20] <@Kaiser-> I know he is.
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> He usually is.
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> Sometimes it's intentional.
[00:01] <+zubus> i love you, ya skirt wearin nothern monkey! ^_^
i had a battle with my friend using the stone thrower. i love this machine because i am deadly accurate with it and the rune of accuracy is just perfect to tweak the odd mistake.
my friend was using the HE and in the 5th turn i managed to land a shot spot on his commander in a silver helm unit down to only 1 of five. unfortunately the first one scattered into nothingness. using the rune of accuracy i re-rolled and got a misfire. had i managed to get him and the last silverhelm i would have one that battle with by a couple hundred points.
in the same game i managd to squish one shadow warrior and caused the remaining nine to run for a turn.
I've had great experiences with all of my warmachines. They've all done well for me and they've all done terrible. Its the luck of the dice as far as I'm concerned with these babies so i don't rely on massive firepower to win my battles for me. If I can take units down in strength before they hit my lines the battle is already half won. I use stone throwers to take out blocks of knights with rune of accuracy and rune of penetrating, Its as expensive as a runed cannon but you'll love it. Nothing better than killing basic infantry on 2s and elites on 3s with a template. And with D6 wounds if you manage to hit Characters and monsters it will leave its mark more likely than not. I generally tke one cannon and a stone thrower in my army. If I ever take bolt throwers I usually mass them and systematically target threatening units and monsters.
Either way you do the math, it all adds up to you goin' down
I liked my Stone Throwers best. Nothing hurts more than having your unit take 8 casulties from a single shot. Its also great for monster crushing
My opponants feared the cannons. They were more accurate but didnt kill as much. Still, was alot of fun to snipe things like monster riders (shot a saurus of his carnasaur once hehe)
My bolt throwers never EVER hit, and my organ gun always got swapped for a Gyro
A Promise to a dead man means nothing.
