I'm new to fantasy and to dwarves and i was just wondering what some of the more experienced players think about defensive and offensive styles? Like which one suits dwarves better? What are some good units for each? etc...
Thanks in advance for the help,
Well i guess the classic style is to play defensively. However when you get those cannons and bolt throwers causing wounds turn one the opponent might not think so.
I play my dwarfs very defensively, and it's worked extremely well so far.
Dwarfs are the slowest army, so it would take an expert tactictian to outmanoeuvre your opponent (and a little help from the anvil and gyrocopters).
After a few games you'll start to find out how you personally play
Well, personally I find Dwarves can be either extreme, or in the middle.
I find that Dwarves are mostly defensive though, shooting at anything advancing towards their lines and having cqc units finsh them off there. Thats personally how I like them.
Heed the Maestro's advice also.
well im an advocate of flexable dawi tactics. and i have to say i tend to make my plans as i go. all my lists are geared so that i can play defencivly or offencivly depending what the situation demands. i personally favour the offencive play almost regardless of the foe. almost meaning i don't advance when i know that i need to avoid combat as long as i can (oggies/khorne being good examples). i quite regularly out manouver my foes though probebly not in the normal way. i prefere to force the enemy to attack certain units rather than actually out position them. most of the time this can be done by using our relentless rule to march our entire battle line into their faces forcing them to charge the unit before them or be charged. dwarves are a slow army yes, but are able to amount to almost any situation presented to them other than trying to chase down enemy cavelry or skirmishers (which we have our shoorting for.)

[16:20] <@Kaiser-> I know he is.
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> He usually is.
[16:20] <@Kaiser-> Sometimes it's intentional.

dwarves are the best defensive army in the game. but dont discount thier ability to go on the offensive when the opportunity presents itself. today I played a game against skaven where i was losing the shooting war so I marched across the feild and rolled him up with hand to hand for a decisisve victory on our local challenge board.
Dwarfs are meant for defense mainly. You can make a pretty strong offensive army for dwarves but magic, if it gets through, could seriously harm your attacking army and there are a few ways that you could quite easily lose with an all-out attack force (I won't explain them now, but for example, as I have said, magic is a big thing).
So I'd say, out of personal opinion and experience, that Dwarfs are better at defense, since they're the best at it in the game and have all of the shooty units to do it. Sure, you can make a great offensive army with them, but I'd say that they're better at defending most of the time.
Against some armies you could change tactics, it all depends on the situation.

I run my dwarfs Offensively. I dont Defend. My Armys advance behind my Thunderers. Then Part ways for my Ironbreakers when they advance on me. I can do defensively with lines and lines of ironbreakers and worrors but then i usally get tired that way.
