At the moment I'm playing a very combat themed Dwarf army with some artillery backup, which seems to be working fine. However I have a rather nicely painted anvil of doom and I really want to come up with a list I can use it in.
I'm thinking a shooty list which uses the anvil and the gyrocopter to slow the enemy's movement, giving me more time to blast them! >=]
Stone throwers are always fun so I'm thinking of taking a couple of those along, probably an organ gun and a cannon to boot.
Four blocks of infantry will form the back bone of the army, namely two blocks of warriors, a block of longbeards and an elite unit of some sort.
I'm still brainstorming at the moment, I'll post a list in due course when I have a clearer idea of what I want to do.
For now I'm just hoping for some more ideas to be thrown into the pot =)
I'd say it depends on what army size your using. 2000/2500 etc etc. But the Anvil is always fun to use. It takes a lot of space and attention, but if you are counting on 2000 pts, I would be carefull with using too much artillery. Either two warmachines or a unit of thunders/quarellers and a warmachine could do it I think. Enough pts for CC as well.
If you go with higher pts you could take another Warmachine and a CC unit.
Im sure you already know this, but just as much as we would like to see the Anvil in action, the opponent want it dismembered just as badly. Protection is vital
Ah yes you're quite right, I should've specified the point size of the army I'm trying to build. It's 2300 points.
I took a 2300 pt army like you are taking about to battle against an Empire army. I had good results with it.
I had the Anvil, BSB, Thane, 2 units of Warrios (1 with WG for counter attacks), unit of Longbeards, unit of Thunderers, unit of Ironbreakers, unit of Miners, Flame Cannon and Organ Gun.
Good luck to you if you try it, I enjoyed it.

Hmmm...2300 eh? Do you happen to have any core of units that you always base your army around, and like to use as a template for expansion?
Anywho, If your looking to shoot them to death, you should go with the Anvil (obviously), as many warmachines as you wish (which should be a lot....) and several units of quarrelers.
I would take quarellers because in an army that you want to win by shooting, it's always good to begin shooting sooner (longer range as opposed to thunderers).
And to protect you from the ensuing combat, load up on a beffy squad of warriors, longbeards (both with shields and possibly great weapons) and either Ironbreakers (the 'unbreakable' center in an armour sense) or Hammerers (the 'unbreakable' center in a morale and immunity to panic etc sense...).

Well... I had 1500 with me and needed 2000 so I took Thorek and Anvil just to try and be able to play... I was so amazed at how well it worked on a Chaos army with 2 Giants and flyers. 3+ to use ancient power made all the difference and as I was looking closer, even if you don't wound any models with the Wrath rune targeting the unit, it still moves at half speed. Oh, and Miners could actually charge as soon as they come out because you could use the rune of Honour during the shooting phase.
@Stoney: You might consider small units of rangers and miners to further slow enemy movement. And I'm a huge fan of hammerers, they definately help stiffen the spine of your army. Good luck finding some elves to land those grudge-stones on!
Hammers definitely are not unbreakable and Immune to panic. You can make them very difficult to break with a battle standard in one unit next to a lord that is in the hammerers, but they will still have to take checks. A units of Longbeards next to a units of hammerers with a battlestandard in the longbeards will definitely form a rock hard core in the middle of your line.
40K-Beakies(9-14-4),Guard(4-7-2),Orks(34-12-11). FANTASY-Dwarves(15-6-7),Beasts (14-14-1), Skaven (17-17-10) DoC (6-1-2). CYGNAR (28-15-1)
I ran a "steamroller" army using the anvil and strollaz rune on the BSB. Clustered everything around the standard at deployment and then used the anvil to gain additional movement as I rumbled across the field. Had my leading units in melee on turn 2 and the majority of the rest by turn 3. Took no warmachines/quarrellers/thunderers, just a buncha warriors, IB unit, two units of slayers and went to town. It was a fun list, alot of poeple were very surprised to see it in action.

Games Workshop is the Wal-Mart of hobby products, except for the low prices. The lack of respect and profit mongering is there in spades.
