Okay, not only is it another "what to buy thread," but it's coming from a moderator to boot. So go ahead and have your fun, and then lend me your long-bearded knowledge to help me build a fun, competitive list.
Here's what I have:
2 slayers and 2 thanes
(basically, I have the dwarfs from two Skull Pass sets)
I want a balanced list that will be fun to play with and against, not the sit back and shoot variety.
I like the idea of stubborn hammerers with shields so they have the option of hand weapons and parry bonus or great weapons.
I like the idea of ironbreakers because infantry with a 2+ armor save just isn't fair.
I like the organ gun, though I'm using a regular cannon model for now.
I like the idea of a gyrocopter, though I'm not crazy for the model or the points it costs.
I like bolt throwers better than cannons.
For heroes, I don't want the anvil of doom, though I do want decent magic defense. And I don't really want the nigh-impossible to kill lord because I hate playing against that (1+ armor, 4+ ward...me no likey). I like the idea of a BSB, too, if I'm going to use significant infantry.
So if my ebay sales are decent, then I would like to use the money for some dwarfs. Seems like a fair swap, VC models I'm never going to paint for an army that interests me more right now.
I guess at this point, it means moving from a 1000 pt list to a 1500 pt list.
So what sage advice do you have for this errant elf/undead/ogre player?
EDIT: Here's a potential (Dwarfs 2000 - friendly)list I cooked up.
Boxes of warriors for sure. You can make warriors, longbeards and even hammerers out of them (unless you're really intent on buying the hammerer models)
I'd go for one of three things.
1) more warriors, always good to have 2 units of these guys. They are cheap and hard
2) unit of hammerers to go with one of your thanes, they have great hitting power - S6 attacks are always good fun, and its going to take a lot to make these guys run from a fight
3) ironbreakers - 2+ save in close combat, may not have the hitting power of hammerers but will win battles of attrition and wont give an inch.
Thanks for the tips, guys. It does make the most sense to get more warriors. I think I'll do that, but only after I get a bolt thrower. I have some other painting projects lined up, and something like a regiment of stunties would only make me procrastinate. A bolt thrower can be done easily in a weekend.
Well, I'm really into the Organ Gun, so I've got to figure that one out. It just calls to me.
I'm picking up my first bolt thrower tomorrow. Of course, all I have to do is finish painting my Melkhior on Winged Nightmare, 6 wild riders, noble on great eagle, and 18 eternal guard, and I'll get to that bolt thrower lickety-split.
Once you're done with the Bolt-thrower, I would recommend another block of infantry. The Hammerers and Ironbreakers each have their good points. Seeing as you have Warriors with shields from BFSP, I would go with Hammerers to give you some hitting power.
Another unit of Warriors wouldn't go astray either.
Wood Elves 2/0/1
Orcs & Goblins 0/1/0
Next Army - Tomb Kings
Have you thought about getting an Engineer? if your going to have a few war machines in your army these guys can do all sorts of nice things with whichever machine you attach him to.
With what you have, after youve done your bolt thrower (good choice, i love bts) id get another box of warriors and either make them into warriors or longbeards. And then a unit of Ironbreakers
PLAN CLAN MAN!!

Yes, I want a master engineer with the bolt thrower. I've seen too many games where my opponent spent round after round trying to hit with his bolt thrower but missing because the BS of the crew was too low. And dwarfs aren't that great for their BS, except for the engineer. So I consider him a necessity in the list. I don't plan on giving him any equipment, though. He'll be all but naked, just there to man the bolt thrower.
Hi there, just noticed this thread, after poking around the DE forums for a while!
Here's what I would prioritize:
-2 bolt throwers, you get 2 for a choice, and a second bolt thrower is about as cheap as an engineer.
-2nd warrior unit, which can also be used as longbeards in a pinch.
-Unit of Hammerers
-Characters as desired, although you can probably convert whatever you want from the skull pass set. I've heard experienced dwarf players say a BSB and a runesmith are all you need in a competitive 2K army, and I generally tend to agree that less is more with dwarf characters.
I like hammerers over ironbreakers because hammerers add the capacity for stubborn, royal blood, and S6 attacks! ironbreakers only get a better save, without even having the S6 option. Excellent troops, but not as versatile.
I don't know if I'd bother with a master engineer. I think 2 bolt throwers with unit champion engineers would be more effective. Unless you really want to exploit the entrenchment rule, or plan to use the master engineer with a cannon, I wouldn't bother.
Hope some of that is useful!
