I made a list a while ago and was extremely happy with the way it turned out, to see the list it's just the 3rd post down or so in the army list section. I have 2 units of warriors in there each with a hand weapon and shield, a hammers unit, longbeards unit with shields too and some Slayers. I was very content with keeping the shields on everyone as that extra armour save would do wonders to hold my brick wall together for the elite hammers/longbeards to smash through.
But the other day I was talking to a GW staff member who has been playing dwarfs forever, he's a good man and not a salesmen pitching wanker. But we were talking about army tactics and he stated that he never leaves home without warriors with great weapons. I started pondering now if Great Weapons would fit into my army. Having an extra unit that can dish out some good damage would be awesome but would be a bit weaker aswell. Though the shields arn't really going to help against a charge of Great Weapon wielding Black Orc's so once again I'm not sure.
You dwarf veterans I'm sure have come across this predicament before, what's your opinion? Do I just rely on my Hammerers for the hardhitting infantry or make another unit or 2 that can hurt aswell? In the end I might buy another whole unit and trial the both of them.
Not a dwarf player, but dwarfs have low initiative so they'll likely be attacking last anyway. Why not kit them out with bigger weapons? Give them a shield in addition to the great weapon to get the +1 armor versus shooting, and of course heavy armor, then get them stuck in.
go with great weapons on at least one of them. The make mince meat out of weaker opponents, and it makes it easier to hurt the big old baddies. THe,ll attack last anyways, and the armor save is still pretty good.

Nah, hand weapon and shields all the way, Ld 9 and a 3+ save makes those basic core troops a biatch to break
Personally, given the choice between the two id opt for hand wps and shields for the reasons given by Stonehambey but i like to have a unit of both in my army- they have a pretty good armour save already and those great weapons are not to be sniffed at for offensive potential

If you already have hammerers, slayers, and longbeards in the army, I'd stick with hand weapons and shields on your warriors. You already have a ton of high strength attacks, and if you are fighting something that'll ignore your armor (kroxigor :x ), send in the slayers. Keep the warriors a little cheaper, and spend the extra points elsewhere.
i generaly think that normal warriors work best with the shields and handweapons rather than the GW's.
dwarves are an atrittional army and we win our battles through static combat resolution more often than not so the higher armour save works. also the GW only gives us a S5 attack with a pretty weak save meaning quite a lot of the units the greatweapons would be useful against are the ones which can kill a dwarf with only heavy armour without much effort.
the elite longbeards and hammerers are the better choice for great weapons as thier higher WS and S make the few hits that will make it through worthwhile.
i personally am starting to look at using great weapons more often in my anvil army. the 12" move from the anvil could make them fairly useful compared to standing and taking the charge.

Thanks for all the responces fellas, goto love to dwarf community on here.
I'm liking the idea of giving Great Weps and Shields to my Longbeards, that will make them almost another hammerers unit! (minus the stubborn, but they'll have a BSB in them anyway.) Time to adjust my list slightly to see if I can fit them in.
With great weapons and shields, you can still choose to use hand weapons and shields on a combat-by-combat basis if you need a wall instead of a slightly-softer-but-sharper wall.
It's not really wasted points as the great weapons are there for the option to choose as much as they are to hack skulls in twain.
like zalzabar said earlier give them both cuz sometimes you need the great weapon and other times you need the sheild and its nice to have the list ready when you want to play a game
