i need help. anything from tactics to army lists to beat any of the above mentioned armies. i have a close to 2000 pts army.
i have 2 thanes, 1 organ gun, 2 cannons, a unit of 12 warriors, 10 thunderers, 16 quarrelers, another 16 warriors, 6 slayers (they have never done any good to me pls give me some tactics on using them), and 15 miners
also id like to know if hammerers or iron breakers are better against these armies.
Right, against dark elves I personally use a gyrocopter, usually to great effect. The steam gun on it uses the flame template, so you can hit pretty much a whole unit, is strength = to elves toughness so wounding on a 4+ and also gives -1 AS so you're pretty much able to wound any dark elf, most only have heavy armour or light armour and shield, so sixes please . Ensure bolt throwers are knocked out by it first as they can hurt it, but after that land behind em end let em have it, if they can't see you they cant declare a charge, so can only turn to face you. Doing this has yielded the death of a bolt thrower and reducing 20 executioners to 7 over a game.
On the simple factor of armour I would recommend the ironbreakers for dark elves as 3+ against their S3 repeater crossbows makes a surprising difference to 4+ on survival, combine that with dwarves normal toughness and casualties (on my lucky days) have been non existent, other times I tend to take two or at most three before theyre forced to enter combat. With AS 2+ in hand to hand most elves St does no armour save difference meaning however many hit you'll most likely stand firm and get your armour saves. This combined with ST 4 makes irons my weapon of choice VS elves.
I tend to take a block of crossbowmen against dark elves, as their higher range over thunderers at cheaper cost, particularly in 1k games, when you're unlikely to really need-2 AS can do some reasonable casualties, and in combination with a bolt thrower and an organ gun, flame cannon or some other artillery really forces the enemy into combat. Saying that the gyrocopter does the same job I've found.
Make sure you're in blocks of 20, the additional rank bonus and outnumber that you're likely to get can make all the difference, particularly with warriors who'll have lower WS than normal elven buggers, you can help this by putting your thane in the warriors to beef them up a bit. Even if you're playing a 1000 and you only have 2 cc units, you should be ok.
Personal preference Vs Dark elves,
19 warriors and thane
19 ironbreakers and runesmith w/ a rune of spellbreaking if enemy is magic inclined
Gyrocopter / Organ Gun depending on cavalry or war machine heavy opponen
and as many crossbowmen as I can get!
worked well enough from past experience, but there are people here who know far better than me.
Will post about gobbos and orks later, have no real experience against skaven.
aut viam inveniam aut faciam / I'll either find a way or make one.
Against Orks and Goblins I tend to use large block of Warriors and Longbeards. I put 28 Longbeards with BSB (Master Rune of Gromril) and a Thane (Rune of Stone, Shield, Master rune of Swiftness, Rune of Might and Rune of Speed) just in case you have that tough Ork Boss that would cause you much trouble... Then 25 warriors with all the upgrades, a Definite Must Have Flame Cannon or Goblin Hewer for both hurt OandG very much, first because of low leadership of Goblins and second because of their high number of ranks. Upgrade a bolt thrower or two with a rune of Penetration (+ Fire for the second one) to hurt and kill some chariots or go through some serious units of orks. Recently I just had been adding more warriors with Great weapons, but you can go ahead and either get Thunderers of Quarrelers. This way you will approach your 1500 pt.
For 2000 pt add a Runelord with an Anvil of Doom and maybe Miners for fun if there are war machines that are bothering you. Hint: Miners come out in a movement phase... then you strike the rune of Oath and Honor with an Anvil and then charge in a shooting phace. Of course Runelord and Anvil give you +3 dispel dice!
So hopefully you will never break because of such large blocks of troops and totally make your enemy run. Don't forget about the banners... Longbeards can have a runic standard with something like Rune of Battle on it
And of course with models that you have just proxy and use dice for markers of extra ranks marking 5 models with a dice on 5 and then just changing it as they get killed ...
Against DE, focus on magic defence. Take elite troops and war machines whilst making sure you can dispell your opponents nasty "Pit" spell etc...
Basically, when facing many enemies, take many dwarves. When facing elite enemies, take elite dwarves (who will generally outclass any other race's elites).
