Default Apocalypse Formations

Anyone had any experience with Apocalypse Formations?

I'm looking to build up to an Apocalypse scale army. I already have a Revenant Titan and a Nightwing. I'm looking at the different formations to see what looks good.

The Pheonix Court of Khaine seems to be a waste of the Pheonix lords who would be better off leading one of their Aspect units

The Great Court of the Young king looks great until you realise that you need to keep a lot of units within 12" of the Avatar for it be of any use which is completly pointless as you end up having to try and balance Dark Reapers and Shining Spears in the same formation (unless I am missing something).

I'm lovin' the Shard of the Voidweaver, throwing around 10" blast markers with 3 S6 hits for everyone underneath seems pretty tasty. And I like Warp spiders anyway so seems attractive.

The Sunstorm looks nasty as well, but I just can't bring myself to paint 6 Fire Prisms

I'm also liking the Aspect Assault Wave for getting the fighty units such as Banshees and Scorps into the front lines quickly whilst being very protected - reducing enemy shooting to max of S7 is handy if going up against some super heavies - specially if you then drop a 10 strong squad of Fire Dragons in front of Mr Baneblade

Also thinking of getting a Phoenix to join the Nightwing in the sky. They seem fragile but they can bring some frightning firepower down and as you need a 6 to hit them I can see them making unattractive targets especially as weapon range is reduced by 12"

Anyone played with flyers?

Hahaha this reminds me of a fun game a week ago. An eldar player used phantasm and redeployed his rev titan on the other side of the board (we were playing a 3 table split deployment with imperials defending 2 separate tables) against the smaller table.

Well this meant that there was virtually nothing to take on the titan on that side of the board so I moved my forge world destroyer (named "the emperor's light) 6" forwards and attempted a hail mary shot against the rear of the titan. I was barely in range of the titan and rolled a hit on my measly guard BS. What happened next was amazing. He failed his titan fields save and I rolled on the damage chart. A 6. Reduced to 2 structure points I rolled again. Another 6. All of us laughing (at least on the imperial side) I rolled again. another 6. Now even my opponents joined in (all on his side except the one owning the titan) Then for the grand finale I rolled another 6 and caused an apocalyptic explosion, killing a total of 9 other CSM (the other team members) and stunning a dreadnought.

Sorry but the mere mention of a revenant titan always brings this to mind

But back to your topic; the Phoenix court of Kane can be useful in that only daemonhunter weapons and large anti-tank weapons can generally harm the avatar since in that formation he's eternal warrior and immune to plasma as well. And all the phoenix lords are great in combat so it is quite powerful and I don't think there's anything against them leading their own aspects anyway (although i'd avoid that with Maugna Ra as that would be a waste of dark reapers)

I think the striking scorpion formations is one of the best ones out there. They can charge into terrain and wipe out any enemy only to move all the way across the board in the next turn. Very useful on the large apoc boards. although the warpspider one is pretty cool too.

The wave serpent one is sweet as well, forcing large numbers of pinning checks on its way to deliver its pay load. I've had to play against this, and it is very annoying for my guard

Ouch don't! I haven't even put my Titan together yet and I already see visions of me spending days on the prep, assembly and paintjob only to lose him in turn one before he even gets a shot off. I'll need counselling if that happens

I really love the scorpions data sheet.

The phoenix court of the young king is solid if you want a hard center.

the great court is a waste of aspects and its the only formation I don't ever run

I run a sunstorm andI must say that it is god!

My most favorite data sheet though is the seer council, its amazing to watch them do their thing... and nobody expects it at all, lol.

@MadLarkin: That is hillarious, I love it when things go like that... to date Ive never had my Rev blown up... But there isn't much you can do if your opponent rolls that well... Why is it though that when I hear that story I almost want to cry, even though the Rev is the 'lightest,' of titans...lol

So how do you use the Seer Council? They look handy, but a little light on mobility and range given the size of an Apoclypse table - Worth taking a Waveserpent for another unit and getting them to hijack it?

Yes, as you said they aren't the best movement wise, but I have been hijacking a WS to get them around.

How do I use them? Well I like to do a few things:

1. Fly them with my six squads of D.A. and doom/ guide/ fortune everything. (really good against MEQ)
2. Give them eldritch storm and doom/ Eldritch/ destructor everything of the enemies. (really good against horde)

Note: if you have enough farseers you can do both things. But that is how I generally use them. The best thing is all the assets you get when you run them. And I might want to use one of the new Eldar assets with this formation (webway portal, or whatever its called.)

You're right, I've just looked this over in more detail and the Assets are worth the 100 pts and then some. Plus doubling the range of Doom and Eldritch storm will defo catch people by surprise.
