I'm basically new to fantasy, and this is my first army. Any tips/suggestions?
I'm thinking something like:
Master engineer on mechical steed
20 Free company
1 Great cannon and 1 Mortar
4 Dogs of War Leadbelchers
Obviously, I know I can't field all of that at once with normal rules. I wasn't planning on it.
First up, wrong forum. This is for the Army Lists.
But for my advice, I'd say you need far more combat troops. Also drop some of those Handgunners for Crossbowmen. Their extra range is ultimately useful. Personally I'd not bother with the Leadbelchers. They're too unpredictable and short-ranged.
What opponents do you have?
Don't drop the handgunners, they will work well with your wizards if you change their lores so that they fit the opponent you encounter.
Drop the 20 free company, they are just a waste of points, same with the leadbelchers, also the pistoliers could be scrapped for more outriders.
With the Knights make them a hell of a lot bigger than 8, mainly because currently you have no rank bonus and no character to boost them.
With the engineers I totally agree with buckero0 they are useless, and the mechanical steed is again a waste of points because if you take an engineer they should stay with your artillery.
With the warrior priest, I dont rate them highly because they are a poor version of a captain of the Empire with some naff spells that will nearly always get dispelled, or atleast have such little effect they were a waste of time.
As for the rare choices, the volley gun is not so much use as it once was, however teamed with another one they can work by the fact that they will rape anything if you concentrate your fire.
As for the Steam Tank, I have a distinguished love for these things, mainly because they are so god damn hard that people panic and ignore your army and attempt in vain to destroy it even though they will rarely succeed. Normally I have found players kill their own steam tanks by accident (Stupid steam points lol)
And finally as has been said increase you infantry blocks by at least double, and support them with the occasional detachment of crossbowmen as they are cheap and have a good range. Whereas handgunners as detachments usually get one less round of fire and seem to die quicker than anything else as a detachment for some unknown reason.
It's sort of an Inquisition-themed army though, so I generally have reasons for having most of the things I did...
Thanks though, I'll take those into consideration.
If it's supose to be more of a Inquisitior- themed army. Then I'd make it more heavy with warrior priests, free company, and throw in flagellants. Those are what mark it as that kind of army.
The swordsmen I'd increase to include another unit, as for halbediers. I would drop them for spearmen, since they work better and you can get more attacks in using them defensively than you would halbediers.
Other than that, another good idea is to look around at different empire armies and look at what you like and test them out.
Last but not least, it also helps to let us know what kind of armies are you expecting to go up against. That always helps us help you.
I'll be damned before the soldiers of the Emperor are just left to rot!
Last words of Colonel Densit from the Rahaxin 19th
"DISS NOT THE EMPEROR'S POINTED STICK, HERETIC!"
If it doesn't work with the Emperor. Then it's been officially Karmooned!!!
