    2.5k New Player Empire List-Need Help

    Play alot of 40k and vampire counts and am looking at a new WFB army so I'm going to proxy some lists to see which army to go for, it's between Empire, High Elves and Bretonnians. I like the number of troops the Empire can bring to the table (I play guard in 40k mainly so it makes sense)


    I don't want a gunline list and I prefer a more classical medieval army feel to it, hence no artillery, but still want some handgunners mainly for the hochland long rifle, although might switch them over to crossbowmen. How's my magic defense? I only have 4 DD but I also have 4 scrolls, hopefully that'll last me long enough to get stuck in. I might drop that group of 20 free company for some other state troops or for a cannon, I just had 100 pts free, so what do yall think?

    Warrior priests can't take scrolls. Drop one of them for a wizard with two scrolls, and you have a nice defence. The WP you keep would benefit from a GW and the VHS. You're saving yourself 15pts, and taking a potential combat monster.

    Whether you take the huntsmen or not is up to you (they can have their uses. I also run WEs, so I know what scouts can achieve). But not taking them can give you some other nice units (like a unit of 10 flagellants). I would drop both XBowmen detachments, and make one big unit, although the two small ones can make more that the enemy has to kill. Again, it's your choice.

    For your big cc units, I think your detachments are too big. Seven to eight is what I prefer to use for the combat detachments. They can take a couple of casualties, and still be at maximum efficiency (halberdiers and free company tend to work fine). The shooting detachments, I would drop for handgunners. You're taking them mainly for the support fire, so make it count for more.

    The greatswords could probably use another detachment. The pistoliers are good, but I'd drop one for a musician (fast cavalry tend to do a lot of fleeing), and the KotIC are pretty nice too, and can also work with the steel standard.

    I shifted some stuff around, making detachments smaller and such and changed the war priests so that they're legal. does this look better?

    By Talisman of Magnus, I presume you mean the Shroud of Magnus? If so, that's a good item to have (MR2 is really handy). The BSB looks good, but I wouldn't bother with the horse, unless you plan on sticking him in a unit of infantry. The WP looks fine, but I'm interested as to why you have a level two wizard as a scroll caddy. They tend to do much better if they're specialised in something. I'd either play around with the items (to something slightly more offence-oriented), or drop him to level one.

    The Detachments look quite a bit better (them generally functioning at their best when around seven-10 in size). Whether you give your spearmen shields is up to you.

    The battle mage is level 2 because I had a vain hope that I could get something off in the magic phase, definitely not worth it after I tried it with only 4 PD and a bound spell, I'll be dropping the upgrade and spending it elsewhere....

    And I did end up giving the spear men shields, A 5+ is so much better than a 6+ saves (and I make an inordinate amount of 5+ saves with my 40k guard army)
