Hi, i've been playing whfb for a while now and decided for a new army. anyway here i am and i've come up with my first empire list. I'm trying to make it immediately achieveable and would like to keep to the battalion, a character or 2 and 1 extra regiment set. My original list is as follows:
armour of meteoric iron, icon of magnus
2 dispel scrolls
detachment of 10 free company
full command, detachment of 10 archers
mainly i chose whats here because a lot of it is in the battalion. With the detachments it seemed a good idea to try filling units weaknesses by pairing shooting and non shooting units together. The mage is there purely for some dispelling ability. Any comments on this list are welcome. Thanks!
Your tactical idea's sound fine and your reason for sticking to the batallion in the beginning is a fair one. Your list however, as presented here, is illegal. A parent unit can only have a detachment up to half the number of models in the parent unit. Then again it can have two of these detachments. So a quick fix would be to split both detachments in 2. Which is I think for shooting detachments better anyway.
On to the actual content of the list.
The first thing that pups-ups is the size of your combat units. Empire units need their bulk, so 10 men won't be enough. Usually I start with at least 20-25 men per unit of core infantry. I guess 20 will be oke for 1k pts. I would use the points of free company detachment to boost your swordsmen. Handgunners usually manage without any detachments in my armies.
As for your characters, I'm not completely sure. My experience with 1000 pts. is that people will either just ignore magic and hope for the best with their 2 dice, or go full force with a lot of wizards, in which case you won't stand much of a chance anyway. But which this array of characters you might be able to stop that. Though I'm wondering if you are most pts-effective with the wizard.
The warrior priest is a solid choice, but I'm again not sure how effective the Icon of Magnus is. I wouldn't expect many fear causing units, unless you know you are playing against undead or deamons.
The rest of your units will be just fine.
Hope this helped and good luck in battle.
CmdrWrein, here, is right. Your Swordsmen look too small to be really competitive. My first priority would be to beef them up to 20 with a full command.
In honesty, your Handgunners probably won't need a Detachment. Any enemies encountered will likely either be fast, small marauding units that are prone to getting shot, or big, R&F units who you'll likely be unable to beat with a US10 Detachment, and the points released by them should help bringing your Swordsmen unit up to 20.
Also, I suspect your Detachment of Archers is too big. If you have too many, they'll start to get in each others' way. A Detachment of five should do the job well, and you can either get a Detachment of eight Halberdiers/Free Company for your Swordsmen, or just use them as a 'points bank'.
Everything else looks good. Personally, I think Musicians are necessary for every Fast Cav unit, so it should make for a good investment for your Pistoliers. Your Warrior Priest would also benefit from the Van Horstmann's Speculum, especially if you face WoC/VCs (the Sigil of Sigmar/VHS/GW combo is a nice one).
Hope this helps.
sorry about the thing with the detachments, i never really looked at their rules properly because someone explained them to me before but obviously not completely! so taking all advice into account someting like this might be better? ( the armies i play against are daemons all khorne force, WoC, brettonians and lizardmen)
van horstmanns speculum, heavy armour, additional hammer
8 inner circle knights
musician, outrider with repeater pistol
exactly 1000 points
i decided that given the armies i'm facing not being particurlarly magic heavy at this points level to drop the mage and take luthor huss to lead my knights. Is this list any better? I still feel like i have to protect the general after just coming out of vc.
