    2250 Empire Casual list

Heya. Just looking for thoughts on how I can improve/change my army list. I'm in the process of putting together an Empire army for casual weekly play, something I can quickly re-tool to be competitive if I decide to go tournament hopping this coming year.

    Lords

    General: 183 pts.
    Sword of Righteous Steel
    Dawn Armour
    The White Cloak
    Shield

    Heroes

    Captain: 145 pts.
    Battle Standard Bearer
    Banner of Sigismund
    Full Plate Armor

    Warrior Priest: 144 pts.
    Armour of Meteoric Iron
    Icon of Magnus
    Great Weapon

    Battle Wizard: 115 pts.
    Level 1
    Dispel Scroll x2

    Core

    Swordsmen Parent: 169 pts.
    24 Swordsmen, Full Command

    Halberdiers Detachment: 50 pts.
    10 Halberdiers

    Spearmen Parent: 140 pts.
    24 Spearmen, Full Command

    Free Company Detachment: 50 pts.
    10 Fighters

    Huntsmen Independent: 100 pts.
    10 Huntsmen

    Handgunners Independent: 112 pts.
    14 Handgunners

    Knightly Orders: 178 pts.
    6 Knights, Full Command

    Flagellants: 260 pts.
    25 Flagellants, Prophet of Doom

    Special

    Greatswords Independent: 295 pts.
24 Greatswords, Full Command, War Banner

    Pistoliers: 132 pts.
6 Pistoliers, Musician, Outrider with Repeater Pistol

    Great Cannon: 100 pts.

    Mortar: 75 pts.

The plan is to have the Greatswords hold the center of the line, flanked immediately by the Swordsmen with BSB on one side and the Spearmen with Warrior Priest on the other. This big block of troops provides a hard-to-move target to hold any enemy charges while the Pistoliers and Knightly Orders move around the sides to harass and flank charge the bad guys. Huntsmen provide march blocking along with the Pistoliers, and the Handgunners and artillery soften the bad guys up as they move in.

    So whaddya think?

Your list is very similar to mine, and it can indeed be retooled to be more competitive. In my experience you will need more magic defense. (Add wizard with rod of power and power stone).

A few suggestions for minor tweaks.
    * Add a barded warhorse to your general and BSB. It gives them a significantly better save, and they can still be in an infantry unit without being picked out / losing look-out sir. And they don't tend to become single characters anyway hence won't need the 360 degree view.
    * I prefer the warrior priest in this configuration (use him always lke this) in my greatsword unit. I hate it when they start running because of an outnumber-fear combination.
    * I would drop the standard on your knights. They will still be a great unit but a little more sacrificable. (For example to get a flank shot on a unit of blood knights with your cannon).
    * If you need points somewhere you could save a bit on flagellants (or maybe your 6th pistolier).
    * Personally I would make the handgunner unit a little smaller and give them a marksmen with repeater handgun. Same number of shots and points as 2 additional men, but less space in your deployment zone.

Thanks for the very useful input, CmdrWrein. I've also been talking to a couple of experienced Empire players I know, and I've retooled the list a bit to be better. Here's the new one. Comments, as always, are appreciated and strongly encouraged!

    Lords

    Arch Lector: 226 pts.
    Armour of Meteoric Iron
    Holy Relic
    Icon of Magnus
    Great Weapon

    Heroes

    Captain: 143 pts.
    Battle Standard Bearer
    Banner of Sigismund
    Full Plate Armor

    Battle Wizard: 150 pts.
    Level 2
    Rod of Power
    Power Stone

    Battle Wizard: 150 pts.
    Level 2
    Dispel Scroll x2

    Core

    Swordsmen Parent: 169 pts.
    24 Swordsmen, Full Command

    Halberdiers Detachment: 50 pts.
    10 Halberdiers

    Spearmen Parent: 140 pts.
    24 Spearmen, Full Command

    Free Company Detachment: 50 pts.
    10 Fighters

    Huntsmen Independent: 100 pts.
    10 Huntsmen

    Handgunners Independent: 116 pts.
12 Handgunners, Marksman with Repeater Handgun

    Knightly Orders: 162 pts.
    6 Knights, Musician, Preceptor

    Flagellants: 210 pts.
    20 Flagellants, Prophet of Doom

    Special

    Greatswords Independent: 295 pts.
24 Greatswords, Full Command, War Banner

    Pistoliers: 114 pts.
5 Pistoliers, Musician, Outrider with Repeater Pistol

    Great Cannon: 100 pts.

    Mortar: 75 pts.

With this build, I'm looking at 6 base dispel dice plus up to 3 extra each turn, plus some magic support against poorly prepared armies (a great improvement in both areas over my last build). The Arch Lector will deploy with the Greatswords in the center, with the Swordsmen and BSB on one side and the Spearmen on the other. The rest is pretty much the same as before, with the Wizards roaming and either firing magic missiles or casting support spells on stuff. I'm thinking about taking one Light and one Amber Wizard, since their spells are relatively easy to cast and pretty effective too.

Looks like an improvement. The only problem I now see is that the warbanner on your greatswords has become illegal. As you no longer have a General as Lord choice (which allows 1 unit of state troops a magic banner).
And I would still recommend a barded warhorse for your BSB.

My bad! That's what I get for not reading the Greatswords entry before posting. Here's the Mk3 list. Lots of changes here, mainly the replacement of the Mortar with a Helstorm Rocket and replacing the Huntsmen with a unit of Inner Circle Knights. The army really needed more hitting power, and the Inner Circle Knights should be just the thing to give me another weapon to use.

Keep them comments and suggestions coming!
