Greetings fellow Imperials!
As a new marshal of the Reikland, I'm getting ready to dump a bit of money into my first WHFB army, the Empire!
I'm trying to put together a decent list that will at least give me a fighting chance against most opponents at 1000 points. However, my primary opponent for a while will be a Lizards player who enjoys his skinks...
Well, the Tax Return came earlier than I thought it would. So what was once gentle speculation is now feverish conscription as I toil to put together a decent 1000pt army that I can purchase soon...
Armor of the Dawn
Battle Wizard (lvl 1)-113
Rod of Power
Ring of Volans
25 Swordsmen (F.C.)-175
9 Halberdiers detachment-45
1 upgraded to marksman w/ HLR
8x Inner Circle Knights-208
1 upgraded to Outrider w/ Repeater
here's my idea. This one incorporates a few new ideas for me. It has less state troops, instead opting for a large unit of IC knights. The general strategy I envision for the army is the mounted WP being grouped up with the 8 knights while the Battle Wizard stays home behind the State troops with the gunners and the Cannon. The pistoliers will attempt to either divert more powerful infantry blocks that might eat my staties (saurus look scary) or help the knights smash a block of points that strays from the group...
I have heard that melee detachments of State Troops work well in 3x3 blocks. However, for the life of me, I can't remember why? Any enlightenment?
Any notes anyone cares to point out? Am I wasting points on anything, are there any sheer boneheaded moves I'm making?
Welcome to LO! That's a good first list. Just two points
1. Detachments of 3x3 ranks are maneuveourable which makes counter-attacking easier and makes it harder for emenies to charges into the detachment. Also, it takes up less space on your battle line which is a problem we Empire generals face!
2. I'd take a Musician in the Pistoliers. The only place I can find points is by the Outrider losing his Repeater Pistol. Also, you'd have five points left then which I'd spend replacing the Wizard's Ring Of Volans with a Dispel Scroll.
Other than that this list is absolutely sound.
The biggest suggestion I'd make is never never never take a level 1 or 3 wizard...there's no future in it, unless he's just a scroll caddy...which doesn't appear to be the case here.
Other than that, I'd say that the knights can take much better care of themselves than the swordsmen can. I'd suggest dismounting the WP to give the staties a spine. The deathstar-ness (if you can call it that) of the priest-led kaniggits won't matter if the enemy runs right over your battle line and into your handgunners and cannon. Another thought is to substitute a second priest for the wizzie. A WP with heavy armor and great weapon is 98 points, giving you 15 points to spend elsewhere, like on that musician...
