Ok, I'm a complete newbie when it comes to empire, as I've just decided that after 20 years of Slashing and chopping (WoC and O&G) and the occasional stabbing (HE) it is time to sit back (waaay back) and unleash some black powder death.
So its definately going to be a gunline list, and I don't mind it being a bit extreme as I feel that I've earned it since two of my most regular opponents play Dwarfs.
The list for 1000 points is as follows:
-Master Engineer. Hochland long rifle
-Battle wizard. Level 2 (Probably Fire or Heavens)
Heroes total: 185pts
-20 Hangunners - FC, Hochland long rifle
Core total: 280
Special total: 425
Helblaster Volley Gun
Rare total: ...
What I'm of course wondering is if a list like this is even going to work - can it be expected to slay the enemy before he hits my super soft line? In most gunline lists I see at least one combat unit - is this a must have?
I could of course sacrifice the long rifles for some items for my Wizard, but wanted to hear your opinions first. I like the idea of 2 chances to snipe at enemy characters per turn, but would my engineer be better spent helping a machine anyway?
I haven't bought any models except the Empire models from the 6th edition box that I have hidden somewhere, so I'm in no way restricted to these models.
Thanks in advance for any help =)
With that many war machines to babysit, the engineer's HLR is never going to be used. At the same time, the HLR upgrade on the handgunners is ridiculously expensive for what you get. I would, in fact, dump them both. With that much artillery on the board, your most pressing need is actually another engineer. I'd recommend dropping the battle wizard down to a L1 (fire, since it has the best default spell for a weakling like him) to piece together more points for the second engineer...and if you need more points (I can't remember what the L2 upgrade costs), drop a crossbowman or two. Actually, although I'm generally more a fan of crossbowmen than handgunners, due to their better range, in this army, I'd go handgunner-pure. You have more than enough artillery to murder stuff outside of handgun range, and anything inside handgun range is threatenign enough to be worthy of -2 to his armor save!
IG since 1999 __ DA since 2002 __ Tau since 2005 __ SoB since 2007
Brets 1997-1999 __ TK since 2009 __ Empire since 2010
Thanks alot mate.
Yeah I guess I got carried a bit away by the 'coolness' of those Long rifles =P
Dropping both rifles and a level on the Wizard will get me the points for another engineer and with 10 points to spare.
