this is my first time playing with Empire and i wanted to come up with an army going through 500point blocks.
Captain - 79
swordsmen x19 - 139
Hand Gunner Detachment x 5 - 40
Hand Gunner Detachment x 5 - 40
Huntsmen x10 - 100
Cannon - 100
the idea is for the huntsmen to deploy in cover (hopefully) and worry enemy flanks/warmachines
The cannon to play with anything hurty and to protect a flank
The swordsmen to sit in the middle with a Detachment of Hand gunners either side to stand and shoot as well as protecting other flank
The captain sits with the Swordsmen
would I be better off with a bigger unit of Swordsmen supported with 1 bigger detachment of either halberdiers/Free company/Hand gunners?
Is the cannon ok for the points or would a HBVG be better?
I chose the captain due to his relatively low points even with AoMI, would it be better to put in a wizard/WP?
Thank you very much for your time in reading this
I'm not sure you'll need a cannon in 500pts. Most people can't squeaze big monsters into the 25%. So I'd probably leave this guy at home and grab something else, like the Hell Blaster or just a Mortar (still nasty against infantry)
Other than that It looks fine to me.If you want to use 'combat' units as detachments you need a good 15 or so (You need a rank to ignore ranks and you'll loose a few to enemy attacks). This means you'll have to up the size of the main unit and find the points to increase the size of the detachments, which is going to be hard to find at 500pts. I'd say leave it as is.would I be better off with a bigger unit of Swordsmen supported with 1 bigger detachment of either halberdiers/Free company/Hand gunners?I think the Swordsmen need the punch of the Captain so i'd keep him. Warrior priests are fun but not really that great if you have no other wizards. You've got your one power and the opponent can use all his dispel dice against it.I chose the captain due to his relatively low points even with AoMI, would it be better to put in a wizard/WP?
Personally I prefer the Warrior Priest because of the hatred he gives during the first round of combat plus if you're lucky you can make you're unit unbreakable.
The cannon probably isn't worth the points, but may I suggest a 5 man units of Pistoleers, they're fantastic fast calvary especially with the vanguard and 10 armor piercing attacks with no penalties (still need to double check the no penalties on the forums though) If you go with the 5 Pistoleers then you can rid of the 10 Handgunners. Doing this should give you 94 points to spare on either upgrading to a warrior priest or more close combat models.
The other thing that I might suggest is using a Wizard with Van Horstmann's Speculum which would allow you to take out his character easily if hes comes with an uber combat guy, plus the magic to support you're ladies would be fantastic.
