Welcome to Librarium Online!
This is a bit early, but I am part of a slow grow league that will begin this month.
I am already an Empire player, but I have touched my stuff in over a year. After the new book comes out, what suggestions does everybody have to make a 600 pt slow grow that increases by 200 pts each month?
Depending on how soon the league starts, I'd wait til the book comes out this Saturday. I can't imagine a scenario where big blocks of state troops wouldn't be a definite yes, though. Especially in smaller games, you will usually be able to put more models on the table than your opponent, so you can use steadfast and rank bonuses to your advantage. I also had success with a small unit of knights and/ or pistoliers in small level games, but it remains to be seen if those units will change with the new book. Finally, mortars were awesomesauce last ed. in small games, but they are due to be nerfed.

Yeah, that is exactly what I was hoping for. After Saturday, I will be looking for help to build a list to get me back into the game. I have been gone so long, that I scarcely remember what is available.
Thanks for the suggestion on big block. Any idea on whether or not we will still have detachments?
At current point costs, what is the better option w/detachments. Swordsman/Halbadiers(my fav)/Spearmen. In the past I remember running Halbadiers with Handgunners and Free Company.
Same question, but between Pistoliers and Outriders.
Yes, detatchments are still avalible, and are better than ever. Blocks of infintry are still probably the best army.
In the current rules, i like a block of 40 spearmen, with a priest. 40 attacks, with hatred, supported by a unit of 20 free company and 20 swords. I find that the problem with handgunners as a detachment is that they are shooting for 6's, and 10 doesn't seem to do enough, while any more seems to get in the way of deploying.
The new book is said to make spearmen cheaper and thus better. Currently, they are the same price as halberds and much less effective. Almost nobody takes spearmen atm since S4 attacks are much better than an extra rank of attacks. Missile troops are less effective in 8th edition but still have a place. Unfortunately, the bonus of getting counter fire is usually not worth having to deploy them right beside the parent. Detachment rules could change that, but if I take missile troops I usually place them on their own.

From what i've seen, the spearmen are exact same, halberdiers up 1 point, and swordsmen up 2, with stat lines the same.
I usually like to have the missle troops as their own unit, about 20 of them, i just don't like using them as a detachment.
