I also posted this thread over at Warhammer-Empire, but I wanted to throw it out here, too, for some review:
Hey guys... I'm fairly new to the fantasy realm -- I've only played a handfull of games with my 1,000-point Lizardmen army (though I ate lots of Dark Elves). I was planning on taking them into the summer campaign, but after reading the fluff in the WD insert, I really want to start an Empire army for the campaign. With that said, I've drawn up some basic ideas, but I'd like some help fleshing it out, since I'm unfamiliar both with the Empire, as well as Fantasy as a whole (no lascannons in Averland, that's for sure!)
So far, I've got my army leader and his supporting characters fleshed out, as well as an idea of what I'd like to use as Specials... The army is led by Aldric von Geldenstein, a young noble from Averland with a fanatical devotion to Sigmar thanks to his longtime association with a pair of especially violent Warrior Priests. His family's best Engineer acompanies the group, as well as a Wizard to assist him should he encounter the crown. The rest, however, I'm not so sure about. Particularly, I'm not sure what number is good for a rank of State Troops, and if/how I should give them detachments. Any input is welcome! Oh yes, and it's a 2,000 point list.
The list so far
General Aldric von Geldenstein -- 216 pts
Sword of Power, Holy Relic, Sigil of Sigmar, Full Plate Armor, Shield, Barded Warhorse
Warrior Priest Volbrecht Weichmann -- 98 pts
Great Hammer, Heavy Armor
Warrior Priest Gotthardt Eichel -- 98 pts
Great Hammer, Heavy Armor
Golden Order Mage Jurgen Brandt -- 100 pts
[EDIT: Removed Engineer, it was brought to my attention that I was reading my Character chart wrong]
Up in the air... Preferably a few blocks of State Troops, supported by some militia painted in Talabecland colors.
2x Great Cannon -- 200 pts
15x Greatswords, Full Command -- 180 pts
Any advice on the setup so far, and especially input for the troops, is most welcome!

Flaggies as core troops would work fairly well.
A unit of knights also, to accompany your general.
I would recommend giving the greatswords a coupe of detachments to help them out.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
Core: Units os swordsmen armed with hammers and shields for the Sigmar connection.
Units of Knights of the Black Bear(Mentioned in old Knights of Renown article from White Dwarf as being based in Averhiem.)
Plenty of Unit leaders with big plumes and fancy clothes as befits Blackfire Pass Veterans.
Unit of Halfling scouts as Archers.
