Im new to the empire and am buliding a 3000 pt. list and I am wondering if Volkmar and the war alter are worth the points as my army's general. I was also thinking of Kurt Helborg as my general. Please give any advice you have on what the best lord for an empire army is. Thanks
That's right, llamas can parachute.
Best advice I can give you is try the army without special characters first. Learn how the basics of the army functions before you make a list around Volkmar or Kurt.

Kurt Helborg and Volkmar are both excellent characters, but a bit pricey for my liking. Putting them on the table will either make your opponent devote a lot of resources to taking them down, or will avoid them at all cost - either of these cases can be used to your advantage.
I'll echo Soundwave.
Special characters can be a crutch and stop you from develoing genuine tactics and learning how to use your army properly.
I'm not a fan of Volkmar, he is too unreliable. Old Kurt is a very good character, worth his points IMO.

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
