Ok, so i'm thinking of building up an Empire Gun line army and came accross the magic item the Crystal Ball. Now i've noticed what may be a very interesting loop hole in the items rules. As I can't quote straight from the book, it effectively says that anything "secret" in any enemy unit within 24" must be revealed at any time.
So, my interpretation of this is you can check at any time if there's an enemy within 24", like for example with Goblin Fanatics have to check. So what's to stop you from putting the wizard with a cannon crew next to where you measure from and use it to "measure" a few distances?
Technically that is possible, or at least I can't remember anything that would contradict that, but that is something I wouldn't see as very sportsmanlike. Trying something like that in a tourney surely won't get you many friends...
If there is a rule against this, correct me if I'm wrong
no it's legal
but very unfair it'll net you a 1 at best for sports in a comp
and you'll be hard pressed to find somone willing to play you

It would only work if there was a unit about 24" away.
If I played against someone and they tried to pull that I would just let it work on any unit that was close to 24" inches so that we didn't have to measure.
Then I wouldn't play with them again of course...
That is sly...and i mean that in a bad way!
But like everyone has said, its really not the most sportsmanlike thing to do.
If you insist on taking it i would suggest using it only as its intended to be used, to discover fanatics and the like.
Otherwise someone is likely to ram that crystal ball right up your....armpit!

Seems to me that someone that really needs an item as a crutch for guessing distances could really use some more guessing practice. It's really not that hard with a bit of practice. And it'll save you points you'd otherwise spend on crutches... (of course, I actually quite like the idea of the Crystal Ball in its own right).
Get you smacked?

The "A Smart Player Will..." theory is a complete paradox. If we make an assumption that everything we do is outsmarted, then theoretically we can never win.
I'm with the "gets you smacked" crowd - it seems like it's exceedingly bad form. When you consider that deployment zones are typically 24" apart to begin with, it's really not that hard to make a good guess as to which units are within 24". I'd probably use DotR's method on this one if I felt someone was being a poor sport about it.
Not being a tournament player, I lack the ability to give low sportsman skills. But I can throw things.
That is too funny, putting him next to a cannon. It will as everybody said get you enemies, but awesome move my friend. Have you tried this by any chance? or has anybody else tried it? I am actually thinking of doing this, just for shits and giggles.
